The game is up. Tomorrow the Higgs Boson may be revealed in all it's quantum mechanic weirdness.
a) I didn't have the heart to continue the last thread I started on the Higgs Boson. It was way too wandering off into weirdness (that's OK, too)
b) Now don't let that Faze you because QUANTUM MECHANICS is full of weirdness and strangeness and is not charming but it is a heavyweight subject. (love those puns)
That being said, the conference on the LHC will likely reveal that scientists have seen the Higgs Boson. True to the oddities of Quantum Mechanics, it might not be the real Higgs Boson, it might be a cousin with different properties and if that's the case we are in for a new STANDARD MODEL of physics. . .
However, if this really is the Higgs Boson then that confirms the best portions of the STANDARD MODEL. The Higgs Boson is the particle that creates mass and thus gravity works. Without MASS nothing would exist.
and then in true Quantum Mechanics flakiness, weirdness and just plain strange happenings... Physicists can go search for the scientific explanations of Dark Matter and Neutrino mass oscillations -- neither of which are explained by the STANDARD MODEL and point out its deficiencies.
That's why there might be a strange cousin of the Higgs Boson out there.

BY GOLLY!!!
And here all of this time I thought that the BOZO BISON had dropped OUT of the race...
...after she wrote a NEW VERSE to the Star-Spanked BANNER...
Oh say can you see... Russia from your back porch...?

And there it goes, wandering off topic again, and in a political direction no less.

Hopefully all are familiar with the Worm Runners Digest out of UCLA.
AKA the Journal of Irreproducible Results.
In that realm I believe if theoretical physicist hypothesize a particle,
they are doing to find it.
Next up,
What happens when Anti-Matter comes in contact with Dark Matter.
And if Dark Matter is the same as Matter so it would be the same annihilation of "stuff",
is there Dark Anti Matter too?
Blend with their relative energies,
Dark Energy, old fashion Energy, there must be anti Energy and therefore anti Dark Energy.
Future grants for resolving the relationships of all the above in a universal set of strings.

I suspect that will be the next big search for theoretical physicists...
What is the nature of dark matter?
How does it change the STANDARD MODEL?

I get it, this is some cool stuff but how does it effect us, now or in the future? Why should we care?
How will it effect our lives if we understand how this works and can prove it?
Some science to me seems to be frivolous. How will knowing that there are multiple universes help us in any way? Should we build a probe to send over and say HI?
Personally I have already spent more time on this then its worth and wasted several minutes that are lost forever.

Some of this stuff may never bear fruit in our lifetimes, but a lot of it will down the line... in the near future.
Identifying the Higgs Boson may allow us in the future to communicate faster or travel faster than we can now. Imagine if you could know how mass is affecting matter, and shift the mass off of the matter. As mass is a limit to the speed of light... How fast could you go without mass?
Okay, the above is a bit of science fiction, but not so fanciful if we discover the Higgs. It will more likely provide better sources of energy, and improve communications and computing capability in the nearer future.
Knowledge is never useless. We always find a way to utilize it. Sometimes our technology just needs to catch up. We knew the Earth was round back in the 1400's, but it took until the 20th Century for us to orbit the Earth. Sometimes it can take us a while, but we do eventually put it to use.
Knowledge obtained from pure science never sits idle on a shelf.

When Einstein developed his thoery of relativity, got similar questions, is it worth anything. At the time there was no practical use of course. But right now our gps's would have been very inaccurate without it and much less useful, if useful at all.
If humankind would worry only for its own wellbeing, if instead of building large hadron collider pensions would have risen one euro or two, then there was no electricity, no airtravel, no radio or TV, no aluminium, no oil, no weatherforecast... etc.
I would like to see what new questions will arise, as now we know that Standard Model theory is true. Anyone? Gravity? Mass? speed of light? 4th dimension? dark matter?

Let me point to a few discoveries that bore rich fruit over time.
a) electricity - from the silliest experiment of flying a kite in a thunderstorm (apocryphal) to Edison's first light bulb to our wired society today. The knowledge of electrons, protons and neutrons did transform the world.
b) the discovery of "antimatter" -- that there exit protons with negative charge and electrons with positive charge did eventually result in PET Scans (Positron Emission Tomography) for medical reasons.
c) X-Rays and all they are used for.
So the discovery of the largest boson or the Higg's Boson (which is stupidly called the God Particle) is worth the effort...
The possibilities are the understanding of mass and gravity.
Remember, we sent one telescope into orbit and discovered the pictures are so good and advanced science so much that we now have dozens that look everywhere. They gaze at other planets, asteroids, the sun and to the oldest lights in the universe.
