EA Hosting

Post by kristoff »

Talula and I were talking the other morning about our service provider, and the problems we had a week ago with something that took us offline, and that should not have happened. In other respects they’re good, convenient, and in a local market, cost effective.

However, they are not cost effective outside of the local region. We were discussing a few variants on some possibilities. One would be using another host VPS which is 33% cheaper and provides about 10 times that space and bandwidth. We could sublet space by hosting other sites on our VPS. Alternately, we could buy our own box and park it with a service that will provide us with service for a smaller fee, but would give us lots of room to do some hosting. The hosting could effectively pay for our costs so that we’d have a free site.

There are many things we could consider. At this point, before we do anything, we are soliciting feedback from our members about these ideas and others they might have.

Let’s hear from you – give us an earful.

I don't know what that would look like exactly. I'm no good at the techno wizardry that goes into creating and hosting a website.

Give me some time to chew on the idea, and research what it all means, and I'll get back to you.

I would recommend talking to Erin at http://bigclosetr.us/topshelf/ a TG story website. Mostly quality stories (not porn)

They are hosting a number of websites and could advise you based on what they are doing with multiple websites.

I can recommend http://www.nexcess.net/ because they are the ISP for another website I help manage, and they've always been VERY helpful and responsive.

A box is cheap now days. Checkout: http://www.pacificgeek.com/

Even if you purchase a new hard drive the cost of the box can be very low (under $500 with shipping)

I am for this idea in principle. Selling our extra space to recoup our costs, and making donation drives a thing of the past. It all sounds very good.

Here are my concerns.

We will now be responsible for hosting other websites. How much extra work will there be for this? I know I have no technical skills to offer should someone contact me in the middle of the night, because their site went down. I'm willing to learn, and to take on my fair share, but I want to know what that share would be.

How do we decide what other sites to host? How picky do we get, and who do we associate with?

Will this better protect us, or make us more vulnerable?

Other than that, I think this could be a good idea. Unless there is some big risk to our community, or we don't have the technical skills to accomplish it, I say go for it.

Renting space on a server is different than supporting a web site. Support of a web takes more time but it's allot more money.

Renting space does take some time for the setup of the allotted space, and granting permissions. Then there is the maintenance, defragmenting and packing the hard drive.

Beside the cost of the server you also have the Operating System, but a Linux server or Free BSD server Operating system can be had for free, and there is even a Free RAID server, Link🌐//www.freenas.org/
