After the Spaniards conquered the Aztecs in 1522, it was the job of the Catholic padres to convert the heathens to Christianity. One day a padre was teaching a small group of Aztec men. Her asked them how they were named. The men replied that each man had a number and an animal for a name.

The priest asked the man he was talking to to give his name. The man replied, "Ome Tochtli." His name meant One Rabbit. The priest told them it was not proper to have a number for a name, so he gave Ome a Christian name. He named him Pedro.

So Ome Tochli became Peter Rabbit
