Suspect's lucky to still be carrying

Milwaukee police suspect Otis Lockett of illegally having a gun, so they got a warrant to photograph his penis.

That's no commentary on Lockett's anatomy, just a search for circumstantial evidence.

According to court records, police were called early Sunday to a reported shooting in the 2600 block of W. Vine St. They found Lockett, 27, (pictured above) bleeding from a gunshot wound. He said someone unknown had shot him from behind.

At Froedtert Hospital, Locket was treated for a bullet wound to his penis, with an entry at the upper right and exit at the lower left. Doctors estimated the bullet traveled in a 45-degree downward angle.

In addition, Det. Gena Malanche noticed two holes in Lockett's pants, in the front right waistband, and the left rear buttocks area.

When Lockett wouldn't admit to nearly shooting off his own penis, Malanche went to Assistant District Attorney Stephan Nolten, who went to Court Commissioner Barry Phillips who on Wednesday authorized the photographs.

In her affidavit, Malanche said she would instruct jail medical personnel to safely remove and reapply any bandages around Lockett's patched-up privates.

With the photos now in hand, prosecutors are reviewing the case. It wouldn't be the first time for Lockett; he was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm in 2006.

You just have to laugh when people put a loaded gun down the front of their pants, because they've watched far too many movies and television shows. I guess they don't realize the safety needs to be on?

Is it even convenient? About 1 kilo of metal? Down the front of your pants, and with possibility to catch the sight on the waistband? (here should be a surprised smiley...)

PS. As usual, Darwin is the last one to laugh...

it is probably fine (to put a gun in your waistband) if you have the right kind of gun. For example, my XD-9 has a grip safety so it can't fire unless it is being fully gripped, in addition to the fact that a semi-auto won't fire unless a bullet's loaded in the chamber. I'm guessing most of these are revolver problems, as they often don't have a safety per se. A double-action revolver would shoot if you just catch or grab the trigger, and a single-action can fire if you just catch the hammer. I'm suspecting many of these are people catching the hammer of a revolver on something, or (stupidly) grabbing the trigger when pulling the gun out. Still though, the waistband doesn't seem like a good idea generally -- you'd think the gun would either have potential to fall out, or to slip down into your pants.

I've never really understood how so many people shoot themselves (including during cleaning a gun). The only thing I do find is that with some semi-automatics you can fire a second shot accidentally if you don't release your finger fully on the trigger and don't manage the recoil. And I could see how in a self-defense situation where you have your hands on the trigger you could fire before you intend. But firing a gun accidentally requires quite a few things to go wrong -- need it loaded (with bullet in chamber for semi), need any safeties overridden and need either a good trigger pull or hammer pull.

This must have been a smaller caliber bullet, a larger more powerful bullet would have blown his penis off. The trajectory indicates that a sizable part of his penis was injured. Entry & exit angles prove that one or both corpus cavenosums were impacted. I'm no doctor, but when one or both cavenosums are injured, it's a difficult repair and scar tissue will form in some way making complete erections difficult. Needless to say, his penis won't be what it was. I hope some urology magazine, like The Journal of Urology or Trauma eventually covers this.

Yes I believe he had his last boner. Nerve damage and scar tissue in the delicate organ is fatal for erections.

I knew a guy who had been shot in the penis during drug deal. He was totally impotent at that point....but the incident made him change his life, get clean and he stayed away from drugs . A hard way to learn a lesson....
