Over the years I have witnessed the Academy Awards seem detached from those who support Hollywood, the viewer.

This was one of those years.

It appears all the Artsy Fartsy stuff were the winners and "True Grit" was bypassed in all categories.

The academy never did appreciate, "the western".

Hopefully the disappointing show of True Grit will not defer future Western projects.

I think anything that is a remake should automatically be removed from consideration. True Grit is such an example. Doesn't mean the film sucked or anything, but it should be something new if it's to be put up for an award.

Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven" won best picture as recall...

As for who wins, I don't think box office should figure in at all. It isn't the People's Choice Awards.

The academy awards have always been about politics in Hollywood, if your in the IN crowd you can get a couple of them, if not you may never get one, no matter what you do.

It has nothing to do with the box office, or public opinion, its all insider politics, being part of the "right" group, the "IN" group. Some of the worst moves ever made have gotten Oscars and the same year other movies were not even nominated, yet years later the one that won you cant even find a copy of, yet the other is a classic. Example Cleopatra won a bunch, it was a crap movie, the same year they made another movie which got terrible reviews, The Longest Day.

I don't pay any attention to the awards as they are meaningless to the public, they only matter to the in group in Hollywood.

Gee, I would have had to have been on drugs to watch it. Come to think of it, James Franco was on drugs hosting it. I watched about a 1/2 hour or 45 minutes and then watched "LIFE AS WE KNOW IT" which is a silly comedy for bubble gum minds.

If that's the version with Richard and Liz (Burton and Taylor) I sat through it enthralled. Of course I was much younger and even got a hard on in places.

But how could anything with Richard and Liz be crap? Next thing you'll be criticising "Who's Afraid of Virgina Woolf."

I heard that "The King's Speech" won the best picture award, but I've heard nothing else about who won; nor do I care. Of all the nominated movies, I've only seen "True Grit," and while it was good, it was a remake of an Academy Award winner and was not much better than the original. For that reason, I didn't think it should win either.

As for JAMES FRANCO at the Academy Awards -- when will any award show learn to get a host that enjoys whatever they are giving awards for -- in this case movies. He looked and behaved like a drugged out zombie.

Remember when Hugh Jackman did it, you could actually see he enjoyed performing onstage and entertaining the audience. Franco stood up there like we should all bow down to his wonderful visage...

And those songs. What the hell was it with those songs? Only four songs? Two of the songs so dreadfully awful that monkeys on toy xylophones would have more dramatic impact. And I do know dreadful music. Not that I think Randy Newman is bad, he's a good composer and has done fine work but his song was for a kiddie cartoon - Toy Story 3. It's made to be emotional and to tug the heart strings. Where was a song suitable for a Frank Sinatra? Tony Bennett? OR even a star wars movie? They took the music to Lord Of The Rings on tour with symphony orchestras... Toy story kiddie jingle -- BAH I fart better sounds than that...



On the list of "things I absolutely don't care about not even to fling poo-poo at them," Charlie Sheen falls somewhere between arresting people who scratch their butts in public and organizing a fashion show for Capri pants.

There was a split. The dream sequences in "Inception" won a lot of technical awards; the secondary characters and writing in the Fighter film were notable; the excellent meld of history and humanity, in the story of George and his problems with public speaking, were classic Oscar material.

No surprises there. Even the cartoons/movies had excellent competition. Toy Story 3 was a great film, and How to Train Your Dragon was excellent story-telling in about every way. I need to see the French cartoon. They parodied them in a recent Simpsons episode.

These awards were not Hollywood sell-outs. The bad dialogue was, but it always is. At least Anne Hathaway (and Kirk Douglas) were around to assist.

Re-makes can be GOOD.

Certainly most remakes suck but, let's see how True Grit hold up against the original over time. I have heard it is closer to the book and less children friendly.

I do believe the Academy Awards are political going back to the Rex Harrison / Sidney Poitier debacle. (hope I remember that right).

BTW I grew up a few miles closer to Hollywood then River. Off the Hollywood Freeway and Barham Blvd. Near beautiful downtown Burbank, home of NBC studios. In those days actors/actresses lived like normal people in normal neighborhoods with no paparazzi.
