2 accused of shoplifting at shop with cop event

(AP)

PORTLAND, Ore. — Two men are accused of using the Portland Police Bureau's annual "Shop With a Cop" back-to-school event as a chance to shoplift.

Police spokeswoman Kelli Sheffer says roughly 60 officers were helping 155 children pick out clothes at a local store Wednesday when the suspects started stuffing shoes, tools and other merchandise into backpacks.

Store security spotted the illicit activity and helped officers arrest 30-year-old Jason Vantress and 20-year-old Shane Alexander.

Though shoplifting with a store full of cops seems risky, Sheffer says the pair figured the officers would be distracted.

Yep, you gotta just shake your head and say stupid.

Well they will get a time out to think about it, and maybe they will change there ways, but never bet against stupid.

I think that a lot of shoplifters, and many other sorts of criminals, do their crimes for reasons that they themselves do not fully understand. They commit crimes for the thrill and adrenaline rush of getting away with it.

I myself have committed some crimes, things that I am much too ashamed of to ever talk about. Now, I look back on that time in my life with very real disbelief. Often I ask myself "Is the way I remember it really the way it happened? I just cannot believe I was ever that stupid! Why did I do it?" And I have very seriously tried to answer that question, "why did I (or other people) do it?" One answer that I am sure about, is that I OFTEN was doing "it" just for the thrill of getting away with it.

The two people here, who tried to shoplift with all these cops around, were clearly not thinking, IF they were thinking, they would have known they would be caught. No, I think their real motivation, was the thrill, the possibility of actually getting away with it right under the noses of so many cops.
