A COMPUTER engineer died after tying himself naked to a tree with a cord wrapped around his penis, an inquest heard. Kevin Kirkland, 44, used a pair of makeshift rope handcuffs to attach himself to the trunk, but got trapped when a knot jammed around his wrists.

Walkers discovered his body slumped against the tree the following morning near his UK home.

He was wearing just his socks and boots and had a small piece of cord wrapped around his penis.

The inquest heard how bachelor Kevin died from hypothermia and blood loss from cuts on his wrists, which were caused by his desperate attempts to escape.

He had drunk seven pints of lager and a vodka and coke with a pal the night before he died, a court was told.

After leaving his friend at 1am on December 30 he returned to his home where he made the handcuffs by melting a single piece of rope to make two loops for his wrists.

He then walked to a canal near his home where he stripped naked and attached himself to the tree using the rope.

Kevin tried in vain to escape in the pitch black and freezing temperatures by rubbing the rope up and down the tree, stripping the bark of moss and cutting his wrists.

At 8am, dog walker Mark Griffiths and his partner Elaine Batho heard Kevin crying for help.

Mr Griffiths told the inquest: "I heard a few grunts and groans. I called to him 'Are you okay, what's going on?'

"There was quite a lot of dried blood on his arms. He had marks on the back of his head and he was quite dirty.

"I wrapped him in my coat to give him some dignity and eventually a police officer came and cut him down.

"As we put him down on the ground I noticed a small cord around the base of his penis."

It's called death by misadventure and it can be listed as an official cause of death. I'm not being cold or heartless but there are certain aspects of bondage that are inherently dangerous. What has been said by many others -- bondage and alcohol do not mix well.

This guy gets drunk and comes home horny as hell. he creates a rope binding in his alcohol addled state and goes out naked on a very cold night. Would he have done that sober? I doubt it. Would he have done that alone with no safety person around if he was sober? Probably not.

I had an acquaintance in college die of auto-asphyxia (hanging) and it's hard on the friends and family that the person was so dishonest and so ashamed to do something that risky.

At some point, embarrassment is better than death. It sounds like if he hadn't struggled so hard to free himself then he wouldn't have had the blood loss and presumably would have survived. I don't think the hypothermia could have been that bad in August, especially since he presumably didn't do it until late at night or even early morning.

No doubt this kind of thing occurs, as they found David Carradine hanging in his closet, but it is easy to rule suicide if no conclusive evidence exists for homicide. Of course, he may have never knew how to actually DO it, but 'outing' it rumor has it is enough to get him on a secret martial arts hit list. Of course, at least they DID NOT out the even more lethal maneuver (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xR7br81O ... re=related) that IS NOT SILENT, but pretty deadly, and we COULD do without the immature prick calling names like a broken record in the background, but maybe he was just nutted. (Or, at least he should have been.)

I'm not so sure that it is as much a matter of dishonesty as it is a matter of discretion and privacy in a world says these things are taboo.

I think the taboo makes it more likely that at least some of these misadventures end in death. Is it the rope that kills, or is it the closet?
