DSM-5 Proposals

Post by JesusA (imported) »

The American Psychiatric Association has posted its current draft recommendations for the DSM-5 and asked for public comments on the revised classifications. This is YOUR opportunity to make a difference.. The website for the entire proposal is www.dsm5.org

For each of the proposed classifications, there is

1) the Proposed Revision,

2) the Rationale for the revision, including all of the footnotes and bibliography,

3) a statement of the severity of the diagnosis, and

4) a copy of the current (DSM-IV) criteria.

For the proposed 302.85 – Gender Identity Disorder in Adolescents or Adults there are some very important changes being proposed. Most important is that it moves away from “other” sex to “other gender (or some alternative gender different from one’s assigned gender).” This clearly opens the way for Male-to-Eunuch. Another critical change is that it proposes changing the name from “Gender Identity Disorder” to ”Gender Incongruence”.

You will need to register in order to make any comments, but your comments will be taken seriously and help to shape the next edition, which could revolutionize how the medical profession views voluntary eunuchs.

While BIID is not yet in the proposed draft, it is in the section titled “Conditions Proposed by Outside Sources.” This is an especially critical area that needs your carefully considered and logical comments.

302.85 – Gender Identity Disorder in Adolescents or Adults

Gender Incongruence (in Adolescents or Adults) [1]

A. A marked incongruence between one’s experienced/expressed gender and assigned gender, of at least 6 months duration, as manifested by 2* or more of the following indicators: [2, 3, 4]

1. a marked incongruence between one’s experienced/expressed gender and primary and/or secondary sex characteristics (or, in young adolescents, the anticipated secondary sex characteristics) [13, 16]

2. a strong desire to be rid of one’s primary and/or secondary sex characteristics because of a marked incongruence with one’s experienced/expressed gender (or, in young adolescents, a desire to prevent the development of the anticipated secondary sex characteristics) [17]

3. a strong desire for the primary and/or secondary sex characteristics of the other gender

4. a strong desire to be of the other gender (or some alternative gender different from one’s assigned gender)

5. a strong desire to be treated as the other gender (or some alternative gender different from one’s assigned gender)

6. a strong conviction that one has the typical feelings and reactions of the other gender (or some alternative gender different from one’s assigned gender)

Conditions Proposed by Outside Sources

There are a number of conditions that are being recommended for addition to DSM-5 by outside sources, such as mental health advocacy groups, that are still under consideration by the work groups. The following conditions are considered “under review,” and work groups will make a recommendation about their inclusion after further assessing the evidence. We welcome your comments on whether available evidence indicates that the following should be included in DSM-5.

Apparently, unless I'm mistaken, you must register. Is that what I'm to understand? Otherwise I can't really see how I can voice my opinion, but I don't want to register really. I did see this:

Male-to-Eunuch Gender Identity Disorder, which is where I guess I'd fit.

Too many disorders!

If you are not a happy, well adjusted heterosexual, you have a disorder for sure.

And if you are a happy. well adjusted heterosexual, you probably suffer some disorder related to delusions.

I had not intended to post anything else on the Archive, at least for the near-term. My interests, but not my gender identity :), are shifting.

This is too important a thread to ignore, however. I encourage everyone who has an interest in

1. efforts to depathologize "Gender Identity Disorder" (GID) or

2. the important work to extend the definition of GID (soon to become 'gender incongruence', I hope) so it will include genders such as male-to-eunuch

to register at the site in Jesus' post and provide your thoughts.

This gives all of us in this varied community the critical opportunity to be heard. The more who can speak out, with well considered comments, the better.

I am especially pleased that the proposed changes will replace 'sex' with 'gender.'

I will register and respond as soon as I have the time.

Oh my, this is what we have been fighting for, for these many years. We much register and make our comments known, we may not get another chance for years if we don't.

Thank you Jesus for all that you have done for this site.

Wow, wish I had been around when this came down the pipe. That's what I get for being a lurker.
