If you folks will note...the young lovely yanked the testicle "out by the root." That's the way cattlemen and sheepmen do their animals. But their knives are so sharp you'd never want to be near that honed edge.

From an animal welfare point of view it's pretty horrific. I'm okay with rearing livestock for food, but I don't like to see people inflicting unnecessary suffering on animals. If someone was going to hack my scrotum off with a blunt knife I'd appreciate a shot of novocaine first. I know it would make the meat more expensive if the animals were given this little bit of consideration, but I don't think I'm the only person who would be happy to pay a bit extra for meat reared in a humanitarian way. Surely tearing the testes out by mouth is going to introduce bacteria into the wound? I hope they gave the beast a shot of antibiotics. Do you think they do all the castration with their teeth on that ranch, or is it just an occasional bravado stunt?

I have read that the spermatic cord doesn't bleed so much if it is torn rather than being severed with a sharp knife (there's also that Henderson tool that twists the testicle round and round until the cord breaks). I also understand that the animal's scrotum is left open so fluid can drain. The animal is allowed to get up and run off straight after this, and the scrotum closes as it heals.

I couldn't help wondering if the little boy is likely to grow up with a castration fixation.

I'm not surprised they took it down.

the less bleeding of the cords in way of castrating by torning or turning is caused by the stretching and twisting of the blood vessels during this - so they get closed against the blood flowing, i can imagine.

a clean cut let the whole squarecut of the vessels openfor further bleeding out..

and it will go better, if the animals are castrated when they are young - so they have thinner vessels with less blood flow.

i mean - with us men its the same...
