OHHHHHH, Cher. (Fanning himself). You have found my weakness. I need to sit down.
Very well, I am seated. It was once my dream to date Cher. It was devastating to note that as she got older, she kept dating guys in their 20s, maybe early 30s. I had the thought to apply statistics to her dating pattern. You know, plot a graph. The X or horizontal axis across the bottom would be years as in 1981, 1982, 1983, etc. etc. The Y or vertical axis would be age. The age of her dating partner would be plotted as points by the year and his age at that time. You would, of course, see points forming a horizontal cluster because she dates guys in their 20s. Unfortunately, my age would be a 45 degree line sloping up and to the right. Every year I am one year older, but Cher was still dating young guys.
The magic of statistics is that if you have a few points on a graph, you can fit a line or curve to them. You pick which one you like. Again, the ages of the guys would plot as a horizontal cluster. But there are lots of formulae you can choose that, when plotted, begin as a pretty straight line and then begin curving upward faster and faster. I was going to match the flattish part to the horizontal cluster. When the line curving upward faster and faster crosses my 45 deg. slope, she will be ready to date somebody of my age. Probably in, oh, say, 423 years.
I will have proved that there is still hope for me.
Is that clear to everybody?
