help with quote?

Since there are a number of scholarly types on the EA, could any body here identify the source of a quote I want to use in a story I am working on. The story concerns a Fred Phellps type. The quote I am looking for goes something like “It is better not to have any concept of God at all, than to have one that is an insult to him.” That’s the gist of the quote but probably not exact. I seem to remember that it was from a French diarist/ essayist. Unfortunately since I now live in a studio apartment, about 75% of my books are in storage, and I have been unable to find anything via Google. (And yes our hero has some changes between his legs)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like something Albert Camus might have written - from "The Stranger" perhaps?
