How many times have you driven by an electronic road sign like one of these?

This is the ADDCO portable sign. Today, you see what is on the inside, and how they are programmed to display important information.

The access panel on the sign is generally protected by a small lock, but often are left unprotected. Upon opening the access panel you can see the display electronics.

The black control pad is attached by a curly cord, with a keyboard on the face.

Programming is as simple as scrolling down the menu selection to "Instant Text". Type whatever you want to display, Hit Enter to submit. You can now either throw it up on the sign by selecting "Run w/out save" or you can add more pages to it by selecting "Add page"

** HACKER TIPS ** Should it will ask you for a password. Try "DOTS", the default password.

In all likelihood, the crew will not have changed it. However if they did, never fear. Hold "Control" and "Shift" and while holding, enter "DIPY". This will reset the sign and reset the password to "DOTS" in the process. You're in!

I can not believe the timing of this message.

One of those signs is on the highway up at the junction before town, and some of us were wondering just last saturday how hard it would be to tamper with it.

Pennsylvania put up big, centrally controlled signs on all the highways to announce traffic delays and other stuff... Now they won't hire anyone to program them. So they sit blank, Go figure.

As for passwords, I remember 20 years ago when we only had a DEC PDP-11 network and word came that a computer network at Sandia Labs was hacked. The news story listed the default passwords. I tried the defaults on or network and to our computer gang's credit they had changed the defaults. THEN I called the head of the computer gang and told him about the news story. You didn't think I wouldn't try the password FIRST, did you? Surely you don't believe I'm that innocent. Serious shit hit every government computer gang after that hack.

(I have seen the hack logs and almost every five or ten minutes a day some fool is trying to hack into any government computer. And I worked for a rather obscure agency. But at least one serious attempt every ten, fifteen minutes -- all day, every day and more on weekends. Get a life, hacker, please get a life. I got in the habit of emailing myself a message from my home account to warn when the SMTP server got bombed and I wasn't getting outside email. Hackers really are pathetic fools,)

My last anecdote is about porn...

The last bunch of computer geeks at work announced that the new "firewall" and NANNY software blocked all the porn. Well, as we all know, that is impossible. So one day when I could talk to the head of the computer geeks without getting fired (About a month before I retired)... I surfed the web and showed him some of the more egregious porn (shaved snatch, huge uncut cocks with piercings, animal parts...) that could get through. The next day, the computer network locked up at the "revised" settings. They never could get that firewall and "nanny" to work right.

One day back in 2003, the computer geeks installed new Video Conferencing setups. So everyone who had to run a video meeting had to traipse down to the conference and learn the touchpad.

So we find out from the installers that this equipment is the best in the world, super duper etc... (yeah, sure)

BUT, you've seen it if you ever watched GENE SIMMONS' FAMILY JEWELS - it was exactly the same equipment he had setup in his house. You might remember it because Simmons used to scream for his son to fix it everytime it crapped out (about half the time). A&E always showed him punching the touch screen and yelling "Mother-f***ing piece of shit" at the screen because nothing was happening. Then he'd yell at his son to get it to work. Nice way to screw up your kids, Gene...

It took almost a year for the technical staff to get it to work right. I guess they never watched FAMILY JEWELS because Gene Simmons wasn't endorsing the product.

I think in Texas sometime recently that someone hacked one of these signs to warn motorists of a zombie attack.
