In this story there is an undeveloped theme. The division between the young men who lose their balls and those that keep them is too total. In a world where half of young males are castrated, there would have to be some relationship between the balled and ball-less. It would have to be sexual, with the unlucky ones not only losing their balls but also their anal viriginity, probably to the young men who won the contest. If those who kept their balls spent half their time fucking men, it would also keep down the birth rate. If the de=balled were simply destroyed, they would commit suicide or go into deep depression. That would be an unsustainable social system.
