I do have a cat (believe it or not) that does warn me when dogs, coons, bears, humanoids, and maybe even chupacabras come around. (We're not allowed dogs in the park where I live at.) When the deer are around the bear isn't and when they are not around then maybe I don't want to venture off into the woods behind my place afterall.

The standard procedure for making sure that you don't run across bears along the trail is to ring bells as loud as you can and to make a lot of noise. Bears don't like that. My mom when I was little had taught me the basics of how to tap out different rumbas by using a small loud metal can (the kind that sweets come in) using one hand for the actual rhythm and the other by alternately adjusting the lid and deadening the reverb creating the counter-rhythms and of course you sing or whistle along for the melody. This probably isn't as loud as bells but it IS more fun to do if you happen to be hiking on a "bear trail".
