Historically, eunuchs created by the crush method were very small boys, even infants. We don't know of the mortality rate, and we can know nothing of the pain involved since many of us who are circ'd as infants don't remember it. However, this technique was seldom used on older boys and men, due to the pain factor and the distrust of having created what we may call a "pseudoeunuch".
Perhaps dear Pueros can provide some bibliography on this?
