I'm about halfway through the first book. It's hard to put down. I like it a lot. Rather glad I don't have HBO, so I could watch it. These are books I'd rather read first, however good the HBO series is. I'm sure I'll have access to the HBO series later on in one medium or the other.

I just started the second book, A Clash of Kings. Instead of reading it, I'm listening to the audio book from audible.com. Usually, I only listen while I'm out and about, driving or shopping or running errands. I have a hard time putting this one down, though. Great series of books.

Weird ... I hadn't come across this thread, but just tonight watched Starship Troopers 3 on Netflix.
I really liked it, as well as the others. What people who criticize it need to realize is that it is "camp" -- they are making it like a B-movie on purpose and having fun with it. You want to see bad acting: check. Want to see breasts: check. Want to see gore both human and alien: check. Want corny over-stated moral: check.
All the Starship Trooper movies are anti-war, but this one is also anti-religion.
One thing I like about it is that it is not entirely predictable. In this one for example, the woman leader is pretty bad (always executing peace protesters, etc.) but doesn't lose in the end, Jolene marries the bad guy (who set up his best friend for execution) instead of Rico who gets promoted but is still involved in what he himself accepts as an endless war, etc. It is interesting because it is not at all a happy ending, but isn't quite like a horror movie ending either -- it is sort of gives you "it sucks but that's just the way life works" sort of feeling (about government, war and religion).
But just silly, gory fun.
And I think Jolene Blalock is hot -- had a thing for her ever since she played a vulcan in Star Trek Enterprise ...

I saw the movie and read the book of Starship Troopers, and I liked both, though for different reasons. I gotta say though, Starship Troopers had some GOOD looking actresses. The movie is worth watching just for them.

I liked Starship Troopers, but I just tried watching Starship Troopers 3 and couldn't make it through it. It sucks, the story, the special effects, everything about it, sucks.

It took me a couple of attempt to, "get it".
When I did I felt their consistency of the Starship Troopers universe and the new twists to it were really pretty good.
If you want to see a stinker, try find #2. It has disappeared from reasonable access.
And if you want to see Indiana Jones take it up the ( )0( ), see the Crystal Skulls. Comparison is from South Park, don't blame me.

I must interject something about the Starship Troopers franchise, it's all B movies made to be B movies. The humour of these is an acquired taste, I love B movies made without the seriousness of those not B movies. Starship Troopers (Roughnecks) is one of the few science fiction comedies I just fell in love with, even the third one.

I watched the Crystal Skull. it was like watching a re-run of the three that were made so long ago. Nothing new, not one for the collection. The movie itself was OK, not worth seeing a second time but worth watching once. But what did you expect?
How many times does it take to show Indiana running out of a temple, wait, Laura Croft running out of a temple with the floor falling through, damn that was temple of with bad guys trying to steal your heart, when your trying to save time, and don't forget the sex, is that big ball still chasing me, are the opening credits still playing, did anybody see them? OH I am so confused, I know Rock was in it somewhere or was that something different?
Now you have done it, I am seeing a tank chase and building being driven through, cars flipping over broken bridges and landing on all 4 wheels and keep going, guns made of gold. OMG, now I am in a James Bond movie, or several, because James Bond keeps looking like he a different person.
Funny how they are so alike.
Must be some really good writing.
