Mom made a fairly light fruitcake (not talking about me) which didn't have too much fruit in it... enough moist cake to make it yummy. Best part; she would make them in October, and then soak white, cotton cloths in whiskey and wrap the cakes in the cloth, then wrap tinfoil around the whole thing. She'd remove and re-apply the cloths (with a fresh load of whiskey or rum) and let 'em sit for another few weeks.

Mothers were heavier, but the same regime of wrapping and liquor. I so miss those as She gave then as Christmas gifts after I was grown and gone from home.

I think the problem with fruitcake is the mass-produced, no alcohol type that make suitable doorstops. That, or those that think they can make one from a recipe and try it, then turn the abomination loose at a party. Fruitcake has just gotten a bad rap over the years because of this. The only one I ever liked was Auntie's, but it cost so damn much to make it.
