Economic Effects On Members

As I was ending another note and signed off about my retirement, it occurred to me we might share how these economic times are effecting us personally.

I retired on a private disability insurance policy. I have been pretty much insulated from the economic fall out, but I feel it. On the roads, or at the grocery store or anywhere one interacts with the public, it seems people are really, stressed out. And although I am relatively insulated - it rattles me anyway and I don't like that atmosphere.

situation.

The rant about "the current economic situation" is another thread.

Personally, although I am insulated in physical terms, see above quote,

I feel the anxiety out there and avoid crowds as it is not a pleasent feeling.

I hope all members except one are well insulted too, but as we are from

around the world, I would like to know how "it" feels in foreign places such as Texas or Alabama or Russkyland and if everyone is surviving okay.

I'm still barely squeaking by. I probably will change residence since where I live has gotten too expensive for me. They raised the rent on my trailer space by $100 in a little over two years. I have been getting rid of a lot of stuff for my move in the last couple of years. I hardly eat out at any good places anymore. I eat breakfasts at a hospital, once in a while burger king or even rarer at a local restaurant.

I hope all members except one are well insulted too, but as we are from around the world, I would like to know how "it" feels in foreign places such as Texas or Alabama or Russkyland and if everyone is surviving okay.

Wow, I never thought of Texas as a foreign place. The economy was doing ok here in Texas until last fall. We had high employment the financial markets collapsed. About 75% of the drilling rigs in Texas are stacked up with weeds growing up around them but there is so little investment money to drill right now, even with oil going back up.

I don't think it's as bad here as most places but it is getting worse. My wife has lost 3 jobs over the economy and the first one she lost, she had been there for 7 years. She is still looking but luckily I make enough for us to scrape by.

I was astounded coming thru DFW. First is Customs and Immigration. Normally that takes 30-60 minutes. Not a single person. Not one. I went right to an agent in a booth, she stamped my passport and on I went. The one goofy thing about that airport is then you have to re-enter the secure area. You know, shoes and belt off, etc. etc. There were three people in front of me. It took longer taking off shoes, belt and the laptop out it's carrier and then putting everything back together than it took waiting in line.
