It’s a wonderful parody and, like Russian Matryoshka dolls, layers and meanings are nested one inside the next.

First of all, I could only watch it in short bursts. I was laughing too hard to read the subtitles (or to listen for what little Korean I still understand). The cast consists of the popular Korean boy band Super Junior-T, which has a large fan club of teenage groupies in both Japan and Korea. They are popular enough that they were the opening act for last year’s annual Korean Music Festival in Los Angeles.

Super Junior-T is a 6-member subgroup of the highly successful 13-member boy band Super Junior which won the MTV Asia award for Favorite Artist in their first year. All members of the group have also performed as serious actors in film or TV dramas. Three of them performed the voices for the Korean dubbing of “Alvin and the Three Chipmunks.”

They were performing a broad parody of one of the most popular Korean prime time soap operas, “Goong” (Palace). It’s not the only comedy that they’ve performed, and they’ve become popular with a more adult audience for their non-musical performances.

Goong was based on an extremely popular 17 volume girls’ comic book series of the same name. There’s an English translation of the comic books available, as well as a subtitled release of the entire TV drama. A dubbed version was shown on Canadian TV in 2007-08.

I do not remember ANY eunuch in the original drama, which is set in 2005 (though I haven’t read the comic book series), so he’s most likely a part of the parody….

If Jema is thinking of the prince’s name “Eunhyuk” (pronounced just about the same as “eunuch”) as part of the parody, it’s actually the real given name of the singer/performer/actor. He’s very good in all his roles.
