Best Friends,
I know this is most likely not the right place to post this but sense most of the posts I make are in this section, well you get the idea.
Tonight I got a call from Gem, Talula's room mate. He needed me to drive him and Sam, his cat to the vet. As it turned out Sam had a heart attack, he was not that old, about 7. We lost him tonight and I held Gem and watched him go to pieces just like loosing a child.
Sam was a great big cat of about 18 to 20 lbs. Black with white paws and chest. My cat Rupert and Sam were best buds. How do I explain that Sam is gone? I do know this I will miss Sam, miss him talking to Rupert, play fighting then cleaning each others ears. I know Rupert will miss him. Most of all I know my friend will miss him, those of you that have lost a pet know what I am talking about, its like having your heart ripped out.
Good bye Sam,
Rupert and River

Re: Best Friends,
I was honored enough at the last MOM to have Sam come and sniff my hand, allow me to stroke his head once, before he turned his tail to me and sauntered off as if to dismiss me for my troubles.
He was a lovely cat.
A friend of mine sent this to me some years ago when my last dog was hit and killed. No one can know the pain someone else feels when a beloved pet dies; he can only know his own and not wish that upon anyone.
A Beloved Pet’s Prayer
Remember me always, but don’t grieve for me too long. I have tried always to comfort you in times of sorrow, and have made every effort to add joy to your life. I never wanted to cause you pain.
Peace for me is certain now, and I suspect I will have eternal sleep in the earth I have loved so well.
Please, after your period of grieving for me, make room in your heart for another. You are the kind of human being that should always have a friend like me to love. Your kind and gentle heart should not be wasted on my memory for too long. Give your love to another. I know your new friend will never take my place, because we had something very special.
It may not be quite the same, but a new devoted and loving companion will in time, become special in their own way.
You loved me very much and I loved you. My spirit will always be with you, and no matter how deep my sleep, my grateful tail will always be wagging for you.

Hi River,
Sorry to hear about Sam. It sounds like he was a real character. I'm sure all of his friends including Rupert will miss him a lot.

Twenty-one years ago, I lost my cat Georgia after being with her 16 years. Linda and I struggled with the loss. I understand your loss.Riverwind (imported) wrote: Tue Sep 23, 2008 7:41 pm I know this is most likely not the right place to post this but sense most of the posts I make are in this section, well you get the idea.

Re: Best Friends,
I am sorry for Gem and his loss of Sam. Losing a pet is never easy. River I am glad Gem had you to support him at this time. River you are proof that humans can be as loyal and kind as pets. Gently hug Gem for us.

Re: Best Friends,
I'm sorry, River. Nothing gets to me like critters. Last night I was cuddled up with my big fat boxer boy and started crying, thinking about how old he's getting. He had a stroke at the beginning of the summer (mostly due to weight, which we've addressed) and he's almost deaf. Breaks my heart.
Be sure and hug your friend often. He's going to need it.

Re: Best Friends,
I sure am sorry to hear that Sam is gone. I know how much Gem loved him. And it is easy to tell my love for kittens when I have 3 in this house. Keep an eye on Gem today and comfort him. I know he will miss Sam a lot for the next several days. Gem is a pretty special guy too.

Re: Best Friends,
Having three cats here I know how a cat is the master of the house. Having meet Sam I know he was the master of the house of Gem and Talula's. He was a very active and happy cat for sure. As you said he had a best of bud's with Rupert. They seem to have the run of both houses as they would move from one to the outer at will.
There is no way to replace a family member. I am sure Sam II is going to be knocking on the door very soon. Hope he can put up with Rupert and have all the fun that Sam the first had.

Re: Best Friends,
There is that line in the song BoJangles that catches it perfectly. "After 20 years he still grieved." After 18 years my wife will catch me with a very sad look on my face and I am always thinking of a dog. Some oddities about the details of her death really made me think about us having an emotional connection with our animals that certainly transcends distance and, hopefully, transcends death. I feel for you.

Re: Best Friends,
I am very saddened to learn of Sam's passing. He was a good cat (as cats go), and actually deigned to let me scratch him while I was there at the last MOM. He also spent a few minutes rubbing up against me.
One heck of a cat. He will be missed.
