I wouldn't mind having that one hot dentist I saw last year giving me a colonoscopy.

Naah. Dentistry ain't so bad these days. It's improved a hell of a lot over the years and anaesthetics really work. As I see it, a visit to the dentist is an essential bit of body maintenance and a damned sight better than tooth ache or not being able to chew properly.

Besides, while the dentist is working away on your mouth you can lay back in that comfortable chair and think of something interesting, s*x for example. Last time I was at the dentist's, for root canal treatment, the nurse noticed the bulge in my pants and thought I must be the ultimate masochist.

You can say that again. Earlier this year I had to have an ancient filling replaced, one that had been in the tooth since my teens. The dentist was worried that, after cleaning it out, there would not be enough left of the tooth to keep him from having to do a root canal. He took a cast of my tooth just in case he had to do a crown instead of a filling.

Never having had a root canal, I had been told all sorts of horror stories about the procedure by friends and relatives. Apparently a root canal was a big deal. Even more so, I had been told, for someone in his 60s.

After cleaning out the old filling the dentist said that he would have to put a crown on it, and set to work. After a protracted, but certainly not painful, time in the chair the temporary crown was in place. The dentist told be to come back the next week for the permanent crown and said, " Sorry that I had to do that root canal, but the nerve was exposed."

Root canal? I didn't even know that he had done it. Yes, he had given me a couple of extra shots of painkiller, but other than the prick of the needle, and the usual annoyance of having someone working inside your mouth, there was no particular discomfort. Now, either I have an amazing tolerance for pain, (Trust me, I don't. except in the context of an erotically charged bondage scene.) or dentistry has improved a great deal in recent years. My bet is on the latter.
