There is one version some where that has: You know you're from New Mexico if you have two cousins in Santa Fe. One is in the state legislature and the other one is in the state pen.

I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Does anyone know how New Mexico got its name? Like North and South Carolina was named for King Charles II of England.

New Mexico was part of "New Spain" when the Spanish decided to go ahead and colonize the land (but only with a missionary charter) using a bunch of misfits from all over Hapsburg Europe (including Spain), Africa, the Carribean, native Pueblo Indians but most of all from a region known colloquially as "Mexico" because that area had been dedicated by the Nahua (Aztecs) as a region devoted to the god "mexitli". When Mexico gained its independence from Spain, the region was redesignated as "New Mexico". After several bouts with the brutal dictatorship of Lopez de Santa Ana and an eventual war with the US the region was shrunk into the state we now know as "New Mexico". Oh yes and by the way the first non-native inhabitant was from Africa and know as "Esteban" who was the major translator for a couple of early explorers, was a slave but managed to arrange for the Spanish to have to leave him behind thinking he was dead.

Damn, they must have a lot of rain there. I'll have to go to AutoZone and get them to show me how to change the wipers before going there. It's been years and I've forgotten.
