Remember When...?

Post by MacTheWolf (imported) »

REMEMBER WHEN.....

• All the girls had ugly gym uniforms

• It took five minutes for the TV to warm up.

• When you could leave your front door unlocked during the day.

• Nearly everyone's mom was at home to greet the kids coming from school.

• Nobody owned a purebred dog.

• When a quarter was a decent allowance.

• You'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny.

• All your male teachers wore dresshirts and neckties and your female teachers wore dresses and heels.

• You got your windshield washed, oil checked and gas pumped without asking.

• Laundry detergent had had free glasses, dishes or towels inside the box.

• When being sent to the principal's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited the student when he got home.

I sometimes wonder if all of the items above were ever anyone's reality or do I just remember it from decent family programming like Father Knows Best or Leave it to Beaver.

TOTALLY TRUE. Damn, they used to wear those goofy terry-toweling boy-cut shorts... I always thought they looked so goofy.

Yep, took awhile, but we had colour TV as early as I can remember :)

Actually, I've never done that, and our house was always locked.

Yep, score one there. I can't remember ever coming home or to a friends home with no mom around.

Heinz (57) variety dogs and nameless cats were indeed all over my neighbourhood.

I got a raise to 50 cents when I was 9! I remember that 'gift' to this day, I was exstatic!!

I just saw my friends kid (8 years old) do the same; that still happens :)

Damn, yep... fuddy mixed with lots of duddy. Although, I kinda like the more relaxed dress now.

Hehehe... ok, you are definitely older than I :)

... WAY older!

I missed the strapping days by a few years; they were eliminated in Manitoba by the time I hit 2nd grade.

That was fun, thanks :)

Yes Mac. I remember all of that and more.

My father kept a tag with his name and address on his keys. He lost them once while on vacation. When we got home they were in our mailbox. Sombody put them in a mailbox and the post office shipped them to us free. If you did that today you would come home to an empty house.

I remember milk deliveries to our door.

Diaper service companies.

We didn't have calculators. We used pencil and paper.

I remember my dad complaining about 25 cents per gallon gas.

124 octane at the pump.

Three channels to chose from on the TV and they went off the air at 2:00 a.m.

Quarters were real money. They were silver!

I remember my sister gave me 50 cents when I was 5 years old and I went right away and bought a pack of Garbage Pail Kids.. lol.. 50 cents was like a fantastic amount of wealth back then to me (~20yrs ago).

I suddenly have a strong craving for a Charleston Chew.

Also when pop/soda changed from glass bottles (that caused many a mangled lip for me) to plastic bottles which made pop taste like abject nastiness. I seriously miss glass bottles. :(

I remember life with 3 channels and no remote control. I would be outside and I would hear my dad call my name and I'd go running to the house. Then he'd say' "change the channel and see what else is on!" Luckily, we only had 3 channels and it didn't take long to surf all the channels.

I remember the first time I saw a VCR and how cool I thought that was. It was so unreal to be able to rent a movie and watch in at home. Since we didn't have cable (and MTV), I would record Friday Night Videos on NBC and had several tapes full of videos. It was pathetic , but such a break in the reality of living in the sticks of south east texas.

Reel to reel tape recorders were "The" high tech recording devices of the day.

"Hi-Fi" stereos, (pre-FM stereo days) where one channel was broadcast on FM, the other channel was on AM. The radio itself had two separate tuner controls so that you tune FM and AM separately.

Having a three speed "English" bike was cool. Most of us had the bulky 24" bikes with the full fenders and balloon tires.

All radios had a CD (Civil Defense) emblem imprinted on them for the emergency stations. Every Monday at 1 PM they would sound the sirens in the neighborhood for a test.

Fishing for coins in a storm drain with a stick and some bubble gum.

Pitching baseball cards at school.

Mini bikes.

Only one phone in the whole house (and the phone company owned it), some had no phone.

My TV still takes 5 minutes to warm up, and I never mastered the tv time thing on the VHS recorder.

I remember my first car which was a 1953 Plymouth station wagon and it was onlt 11 years old at the time. I remember buying gas at 18.9¢ a gallon in California. I got 50¢ a week for my allowance and it went a long way. I got my first job when I was 13 delivering the Reno Evening Gazette. I collected 50¢ a week for the subscription. Most people paid for the month. I had a lot of silver dollars in my pockets when I collected. I remember spending liberty standing quarters, buffalo nickels, mercury dimes, liberty walking half dollars and silver dollars. I remember a pay phone was 5¢ also a newspaper. I remember when Pez candy first came out.:-\

Skivvynine, you, Mac and I are all about the same age. My first car was a 52 olds coupe. Gas was 16.9. yes they serviced the car, My dog was a mutt, our tv was black and white but we had 8 chan. My teachers dressed up to come to school, we called them sir or mam, we never locked our door, we knew everybody on the block, our phone numbers started with letters, like PO or ST or DU. we did not have area codes or zip codes because the post office knew where we lived and real people sorted the mail.

LA was a nice place to live then too.
