Neutered by a baseball...almost

Post by Paolo »

You may or may not know that most of your Little League players are not required to wear a cup during games unless they are the catcher. Most of the time, the pitchers will wear one, but not always. When another 9 year old is flinging up to 40 m.p.h. fast balls at you, you DO want some protection! We do have one that is chucking 46 m.p.h. pitches already, and he's 8.

Fielders and batters/runners do not normally wear a cup.

The other night, our runner at third base, awaiting a good base hit to RBI (run batted in) him home took an almost-foul ball-line drive right to the ahhh ... boys' accessories ... as he calls them! He just stood there for a second or so and then just doubled over with the most amazing expression on his little face!

With our record so far, the ambulance stands by and there are usually a couple paramedics lurking at the ballpark at all times during games. We have the highest injury record in the league so far, thank you very much!

After a few minutes, and after declining the offer to have his "accessories" examined by the lady medic, we got him up on his feet and he was able to run (albeit not too fast) to home plate on the next hit. He spent the next inning on the bench...

I should have taken a picture of him sitting there with the cold pack between his legs, but I didn't.

"Runners shouldn't have to wear a cup!" He squeaked.:D

"Good stop!" We all complimented him. He failed to see the humor in that one. That's a comment generally given to the catcher on a bad pitch when he manages to catch a wild one, or stops it with his body instead.

Of all the kids it had to happen to, it had to be THAT one ...

Jesus (A) will know why...

Whew ! If he'd been older and his "accessories" bigger, that could have been tragic, even fatal. ALL players should wear cups, whatever their position.

sounds like a hard lesson to learn. a few years ago I learned the hard hard way that when in dance class one should always double check your distance from the people standing near you. we were at the barre doing Grand battements en croix (meaning leg lifts to the front , the side then the rear) when we got to doing the lifts to the rear my last thoughts were "oh shit she's got long legs" and sure enough her toes cupped my bag and pushed it up 12 inches! I saw stars just before I currled up on the floor in pain
