LONDON (Reuters) - A British man who accidentally shot himself in the

testicles after drinking 15 pints of beer was jailed for five years on

Tuesday for possessing an illegal firearm, a court spokesman said.

David Walker, 28, was arguing with a friend at a pub in South

Yorkshire, northern England, when he went home to get his sawed-off

shotgun, which he jammed into his trousers.

But as he walked back to the pub, the gun went off, blasting pellets

into his testicles. Doctors later removed what remained of his testicles

during emergency surgery.

Walker admitted possessing a prohibited weapon at a hearing in June at

the court in Sheffield.

A little use-of-English quibble. The usual phrase used in Britain is a 'sawN-off shotgun'. Is 'sawed-off' used elsewhere to describe a shotgun that has had its barrel reduced?

It was the Bobbittizing that made the weapon 'prohibited' rather than just 'unlicenced', which (I think) might only have warranted a fine in some circumstances.

Perhaps the shotgun was getting its own back!

Walker is a clear candidate for a Darwin Award. The award is for removing oneself from the gene pool through an incredibly stupid act - preferably before breeding. It doesn't require death, just irreversible sterility. I expect to see a description of Walker in the next book of awards.

SawED-off is the American English version; sawN-off is the British English. We are, after all, two peoples separated by a common language.

Personally, I think the story is a little suspect because a shotgun or any gun shoved in the belt of a man's pants should cause more damage than described.

However. if that single shot made him a eunuch, I'm happy for him. He can get a pair of new and larger artificial testicles and never, ever spread his genes or his drunken stupidity to children.

I'm not sure about this, but I think that short-barreled shotguns, that didn't have to be sawed off, were manufactured at one time.

According to some, the barrel has to be 18". Anything shorter is practically useless at over 10 yards unless you want to see the expression on their face as they die.

So, if it is going to be sawn off for you, make sure that it is sawed off longer than 18"

In my very humble opinion, If you are drunk and in a pub (Or bar) argument and you are going to settle the argument with a shotgun, YOU WANT TO SEE THEIR EYES! Most certainly!

Now as for shotguns, I don't know. Years ago when I owned several handguns, I bought .22 shot shells for the Ruger I owned. Shot shells were great for rattlesnakes, field mice, and small varmints that could get close to you. And as we all know, just my doing this drove all those varmints out of western Pennsylvania.

My other guns were Dan Wesson and Wesson and Colt - .357 mags and .38 specials. While a 357 magnum surely sent a rattlesnake to his maker in spectacular fashion, it was a little overkill becaujse a stray bullet could lodge in your refrigerator and thaw your meat for the evening. . In my humbled opinion, the .22 shot shells did a better job without damaging ones ears... or for that matter infomrning everyone within a half mile that you were shooting again...

As for now, there are too many kids around to target practice with abandon, so I sold all the guns.

And thinking about it - if I wanted to remove my testicles quickly and relatively painlessly, a shotgun might be efective if you could keep it away from all the other body parts. AFter all, once the testicles are no longer attached tot he body, theyh can't hurt anymore.

This is why I asked about the use of the word 'sawed'. It might have had some specific technical meaning. Since handgun ownership has always been severely restricted in Britain, the sawn-off shotgun has been the traditional weapon-of-choice for an armed robbery.

He was quite stupid enough having the gun in the street, even without stuffing it down his trousers. The police might still yet link him up with a robbery!

Well, that's the reason you saw the barrel off a shotgun - to hide it during a robbery.

And as for stupidity, that's the point of removing his genes from the gene pool.
