Re: I'm back! (incuse)
A couple things might help.
Stop eating sugary things. I know we say that but -- begin to look at what has sugar in it. Look for artificial sweeteners like Fructose. Beware of anything that is bottled to drink, read the label. They even put sugar in Ketchup and some bottled pizza sauces are loaded with sugar because people don't like that sharp tomato taste of plum tomatoes. There's nice fresh fruits you can eat for sweets.
Don't drink soda (or as I call it Pop) or other sweetened drinks. Cut them out. They are empty calories.
Any alcohol (beer or liquor or wines) are empty calories.
Cakes are all sugars. I eat it on my birthday and that is it. Donuts are insanely sugary. With my allergies I had to sink to dry frosted shredded wheat. That's my daily sugar. No milk. I used to buy cupcakes and then I started eating them all at once. So I quit.
Knock off all candies and chocolates. Chocolate gives me internal bleeding and you CAN live without it.
Pick an amount of protein that satisfies but isn't overeating. After that, eat only that amount. Go to the store buy meats and fish and poultry (oops, that spellchecker spelled it "poetry") in that amount and freeze the portions. You might need the butcher to weigh the food but you will eat less than if you take one of their prices of protein on a doily in plastic wrap and are tempted by leftovers.
Plan that little snack at night. Something healthy like a piece of fruit. I use one or two pretzels but then I'm goofy about that.
This is what works for me and I haven't gained weight. However, much of this is because of my food allergies... I'm allergic to half to two-thirds of the supermarket. That's a burden you don't have to worry about.

Re: I'm back! (incuse)
Over the past week I've made a number of changes that I hope to have stick. I've been so antisocial the past few years I feel like I need to get that on track and find some loving friends/family so I have a support system to keep me motivated to improve my health.
Saying and doing are 2 different things. Several years ago I was doing my fitnesspal.com; very helpful app. But one day we had a potluck at work. I ended up figuring out my calories and came to 3k in that one sitting. The food was just so good and I gave in. after that, I gave up on myfitnesspal.com.
A coworker where I work recently lost 30# over the past few months, when I asked what he was doing -- he said everyone was encouraging him to do it and he followed through. I, on the other hand, live with my parents. Dad believes in "better living through chemicals". He ends up taking so many diabetic, high blood pressure, cholesterol, and kidney meds that he just eats whatever is cooked and when something raises or changes, he just gets prescribed more/different drugs. Mom believes in frying and oils for flavor. She doesn't believe in spices to make up for the lack of flavor. My best friend is overweight and she encourages me, but we just do for a little bit and then things peter-out. Everything I do just falls apart after a while. So, first, I think I need a support system to encourage my loss. Until I have that, I don't see anything sticking.
So, back to my changes. I signed up for eunuch.org again, I got a pressure cooker [which is bad-ass], and I've been trying to reach out to old friends I haven't heard from in a while. Last sunday I made a pot roast in the pressure cooker that wasn't incredibly healthy, but wasn't deep fried. I had a good time cooking and my dad seemed to enjoy it.
Slow and steady wins the race is what I've been saying for years; however I need to make changes so this turtle can make progress. I'm hoping my ranting / rambling on here helps me in persuing that.

Re: I'm back! (incuse)
Good to hear from you.
Regarding weight gain (and loss), the most important factor is food. The problem is that our bodies are too damn efficient. If you ever count calories you'd find that running 40 minutes on a treadmill will burn about 450 calories, but eating one handful of peanuts has more calories than that! Furthermore, due to genetics and hormones some people's bodies are even more efficient.
So your problem is that your body has become super efficient at storing energy and using as little as possible.
Anyway, as sad as it may sound, restricting your calories is the most important thing for actual weight loss. Exercise is good to make you feel energized and productive, but one danger is that people will often "reward" themselves for exercising by eating more.
Also, most modern nutritionists believe that not all calories are created equal. Carbs (meaning starches and sugars) tend to spike your blood sugar which causes your body to think it has extra energy and therefore decides to store it as fat. Actual dietary fat doesn't spike your blood sugar (as much) and therefore is a much better way to get your calories. With fat, the best type is Omega-3 which you get primarily from fish like salmon. In fact you may want to try becoming a "pescatarian" -- a person who eats fish primarily.
Depending on your eating habits, it is important to portion what you eat. Simply don't have big bags of potato chips in your house, actually measure your food (you'd be amazed at how little a 4oz steak really is!), and gravitate towards a low-carb (i.e. no soda!) diet.
One other thing about exercise -- when you're carrying extra weight it puts a LOT of stress on your body, joints and heart. Imagine asking someone to put 150lbs in a backpack and go jogging! Keep to very strict low-impact exercise. Elliptical trainers are probably the best for cardio. Do not take up running when you're overweight -- it is a recipe for knee and ankle problems.
Hope that helps! Anyone can transform themselves with enough sustained focus. My wife actually lost 70lbs 5 years ago and has kept it off without much trouble. But she is dedicated -- she's off at the gym as I write this. You can do it!

Welcome Back! It's great to see you back on the Archive. (Tugon, too.) Your contributions have been missed. You are (both) valuable members of the community. While next week is probably too soon to plan to attend this year's MoM, I hope that you will be able to join us next year.

Re: I'm back! (incuse)
Sorry for being away the past 2 days -- I had to overcome some objections my computer had with the Windows 10 Update.
Yes, I was actually just thinking about coming to MoM 2016. I still have pictures from MoM 2007/2008 and it are some of my fondest memories.
I'm still reaching out to friends. I've been using more text messages than before and been talking on the phone a tiny bit more. Interacting with people just got old for so long and I really want to change that. I just find myself so disappointed in people so often.
Today, I did something that was kind of creepy in hindsight. My best friend and I were standing outside when a coworker showed up and spoke to the 2 of us for a little bit. When it was time to go back in, I neglected to swipe my badge and my bff told the coworker that I need some hand holding, so he said he could do that [hold my hand], but was well ahead of me and already in the lobby. He had put his hand out for me to take (jokingly). I mentioned that I have so little contact with other humans that I'd welcome any touch. What the hell is wrong with me? I said that in public to a coworker I barely know. I don't even know his name for christ sake.
Tonight the ISS was due to go overhead, so I had planned to watch that. It was due to go over shortly after work. I was so disappointed that I couldn't get anyone's attention to come and watch with me. No one shares my excitement. We put a flying lab into Low Earth Orbit -- a marvelous show of the human race's ingenuity and no one cared. Made me sad. It was a beautiful site for me. A bright dot racing across the sky. I just wanted someone to share it with me.
Now -- another start to another boring weekend. Maybe I'll find something else to do.

APOD has caught the ISS over the moon.
It's not like seeing it with your own two eyes but if you read the article it says that the transit is about 1/3 of a second.

Re: I'm back! (incuse)
That's an amazing picture! Thank you for sharing. It will likely become my wall paper at work.
Yesterday I wrote a letter to Louis CK -- while high. I think it turned out really good. I'm going to have a friend proof read it and send it to him snailmail so maybe he'll actually get it. Or would it get to him more likely if I just emailed it to him? He likely gets inundated with email, so I think snailmail might be the best.
I'm hoping he'll use the letter as inspiration for new jokes -- and then give subtle credit for any inspired jokes to a eunuch in Mississippi during one of his shows. I think that'd cheer me up a bit.
I also have another pressure cooker meal to do for today. Enchilada Casserole. I'm hoping it'll turn out good and put a smile on my family's face. Last weeks Pot roast turned out great. We never finish left overs, but I ate on that pot roast for 2 days.
Little things.
