Chicago has very good public transit and commuter trains in and out of the city in all directions (except East, of course). Like any big city nothing is inexpensive and it has sections you want to avoid, especially after dark. If you're a guy who prefers the company of other guys be sure and visit Boys
town on the near north side in the Wrigley Field area.
I am more or less attracted (that depends) to the more androgynous males, but other than that, the preference is female. So, if I'll end up in Chicago, I'll probably go there. Out of curiosity;).
I asked the question about public transit, because I am planning to go to the next year MoM. (Lots of ifs, if I'll be able to get a visa, if I'll still have a job, etc...). So, then, I looked at the available flights, and could not find anything closer to Minneapolis, than Chicago (at least direct). And after playing with google maps and it's public transit options, the question was born.
I do not mind walking, but anything more than 4-5km, and it just takes too much time.
