Re: Star Wars -- droppings
You know when the first movie came out we did not have the visual graphics we know and love today, this was great stuff we saw. Today we look at it and shrug but then it was the leading edge.

Re: Star Wars -- droppings
Actually River I find a lot of films are going downhill as a result of too much CGI and fancy graphics filling in the void of terrible plotlines, scripts and acting.
I was meehhhhh....with padme's acting in Starwars episoide 3 very much towards the end of the film.
For a good film there must be a balance achieved with graphics , plot and acting

NB = One thing I could never agree on was the whole midichlorians bullshit. Its as if the force is dependent on these specialized cellular structures. Anakin has the highest level of these. (Even more so than jedi and ancient sith from the past[old republic era before prequel films])
yet his jedi abilities are rookie at best to let's say someone such as Darth Revan or Marka Ragnos or Freedon Naad(old republic jedi's found in the books and bioware games)

Re: Star Wars -- droppings
Let us not confuse the story line and the talking points in the move with anything that was good, it was not at any point Shakespearean in nature, lets face it any 6th grade student could do a better job, it was all about visual effects and the last movie made with the fight at the end of the movie was one of the best on record and could not have been done without CGI.

With the Star Wars prequels, it was definitely the writing. NO actor or actress can sound good saying lines like "You are so beautiful..." "only because I'm so in love." NO!!! NO, NO, NO!!! The writing student in me just cringes thinking of all the things that are wrong with those lines. And stuff like "you're going down a path that I can't follow?" Again, NO!!! Nobody talks like that! It really feels like zero effort was put into making the dialog credible in this film. And let's be honest, the direction through most of the movie wasn't that great either, at least as far as getting emotion out of the characters is concerned. There is this one sequence in Episode III where they are all falling down an elevator shaft, with a 2-ton car falling right behind them, and there is like ZERO concern on any of the characters' faces, even after they escape certain death by mere inches. But not in a "it's cool, we got this" way, just in a dead-eyed expression kind of way that really makes it feel like the whole thing is fake. I didn't believe for one second that that elevator car was really about to crush them, because no matter how good CGI effects are, they're always going to look fake if the actors don't react to them properly. And the new Star Wars movies used so much green-screen that it's virtually impossible to get realistic reactions to all of the techno-wizardry going on around them. In the original Star Wars, this wasn't a problem. You could see that Luke was scared, you could see him gazing up at these amazing things and actually being intimidated, and could practically see the adrenaline pumping through his veins. This has been lost in the recent films. Yes, the effects look much better, but at the same time they look faker because they don't exist in the physical world.
This is one of the reasons why I love the visual effects work on "Lord of the Rings" so much better... because rather than going full-CGI, they still used sets and miniatures and character makeup. And as such, it has a level of visual credibility that other fantasy films don't. You can tell that everything has physical mass.
Man, I'm really starting to get off topic from where I started here... I can't help it, I'm just a total nerd that loves nitpicking the little details in film production, comparing things, and seeing a good movie that blows my mind in terms of what's possible to show on screen.
