On Sunday, April 13, Tokyo illustrator Mao Sugiyama (who goes by the nickname “HC”), publicly seasoned and braised his own genitals on a portable gas cartridge burner, and then served them to six eager diners who each paid about $250 for the meal. The genitals had been returned to Sugiyama, frozen and double-bagged in plastic, following sex-change surgery during which they were removed.

Sugiyama had originally offered the meal on Twitter in mid-April to the first person willing to pay 100,000 yen (about $1,250). But after the notoriety that his tweet caused, he organized a public banquet, dubbed “Ham Cybele – Century Banquet,” at the Asagaya Loft event space in the Suginami Ward of Tokyo. “Ham Cybele” doesn’t appear to have any particular significance other than that Sugiyama likes to name things in such a way that their initials are the same as his artist name “HC,” but “century” in Japanese is a homophone for the Japanese word for “genitals.”

The day before the event Sugiyama tweeted, “I’m starting to thaw them out,” and posted this photo (warning: not for the squeamish). A crowd of what appeared in photographs to be at least several dozen diners and onlookers gathered to listen to a piano recital and panel discussion before the dinner.

Although only six servings of the genitals were available, the other diners were served alternate beef- and crocodile-based dishes. The cooking was done by Sugiyama himself, dressed as a chef, under the supervision of a licensed food preparation specialist.

One of the six genital eaters posted a long, detailed blog post on April 14 about the event, including about 20 photographs (the source of our photos here), but the entire post was deleted on May 19 and a new post appeared stating that insufficient consideration had been given to privacy considerations. Since Sugiyama himself linked to and seemed to endorse the blog post, we can only speculate that the blog hosting service or the police objected to the post.

Diners were required to sign a waiver releasing Sugiyama and the event organizers from any liability arising from the consumption of the genitals. Sugiyama stated that before his operation he had been tested to be free of any venereal diseases and had not yet started receiving female hormone therapy. He also added that his genitals had been normally functional and that the pre-severed penis could attain an erect length of 16.1 cm (about 6.3 inches).

Close-up photos of the braised genitals showed a sliced penis shaft with clearly visible corpora cavernosa and urethra, a sliced testicle with the look and texture of sea urchin sushi, and scrotal skin with about 3 mm of pubic hair growth. Rounding out the presentation the chef garnished the genitals with button mushrooms and Italian parsley.

A spokesman for the Suginami police told CalorieLab that they had received many inquires and complaints from concerned citizens, but that they were unable to pursue the matter because there is no law prohibiting cannibalism in Japan. Nevertheless, the spokesman said, “We’re going to talk to the people at Asagaya Loft and ask them what is going on and why they hosted such an event.”

Sugiyama is cheerfully answering questions from curious Twitter members about Ham Cybele, his operation, and especially his new corset, which he’s wearing to help form a feminine hourglass shape as his female hormone therapy progresses. He reports that video of the Ham Cybele event was taken and will be available at a later date. He tweets that his sex-reassignment surgery cost him 1 million yen (about $125,000).

There are several points about this story that make me suspect it's a hoax. In SRS you don't get it lopped off and returned to you in a bag. It's recycled to become the labia and vagina. I know of no surgeons that will perform SRS without being on E for a while. And from a cook's point of view, only the testicles are really edible. The penis is almost entirely blood vessels and connective tissues. And the picture of the cooked penis is a little too clear. Had it really been braised the internal structure should have collapsed.

And six dinners out of one man's package. That comes to 1/3 testicle per person.

It's hard to ever really know the truth in these cases, however, it is true that most of the penis is removed and discarded during transsexual surgery, really only a small portion of the glans is cut out and used for the clitoris, the out penile skin is preserved and used, and the penile nerves on top of the penis are preserved, along with some of the urethra. The rest of the penis, the internal corpus cavenousms, spongisum, which account for most of what makes up the penis, is actually discarded as are the testicles and most of the scrotum. If you watch this video, you can see Dr. Bowers removing and discarding several pieces of the man's genitals, it doesn't seem to take long either.

NOTE: Not every transsexual surgeon does what Dr. Bowers does. Some might use more of the penis, some might use less.

But even though there is enough of the genitals left over for a meal, six people, well they wouldn't get much, but this is cannibalism. I know it's a penis and testicles, but it's still cannibalism. I'm not sure why that's not outlawed in Japan.

Dr. Marci Bowers video absolutely fascinating. How amazing what can be done, and how the glans and scrotum and penis skin are reused. Too bad such an operation can't be done in six minutes. But it does look very complicated and complex. Amazing that it comes out so good and there appears to be so little bleeding during the operation, by a professional. Thanks for posting.
