Man Who Lost His Penis Urges Clinic Controls
February 8, 2011
By pa.di.
A man, who preferred to remain anonymous, is asking Panamas Ministry of Health to impose stricter controls on private clinics offering novel treatments.
The victim is suing the Obarrio-based Mens Quality clinic over a premature ejaculation and erectile disfunction treatment that caused him to lose his penis, TVN Noticias reports.
He says that he was given an injection which caused priapism a painful, persistent erection without sexual arousal that can cause cell death. His erection reportedly lasted 50 hours.
Juan Carvajal, the victims lawyer, explained that the clinic had called urologists in Chile who recommended that he go to the emergency room where a medical board told him to have his penis removed or face death.
The clinic is a branch of the Mens Quality Medical Group of Santiago, Chile. Thegroups website is beingremodeled, but additional information about their services is available through their Facebook page.

Here's my translation of the Spanish article:
---
The man who lost his penis after a supposed treatment in a private clinic asked the Ministry of Health of Panama [MINSA, for its initials in Spanish] to have greater control of private centers that offer novel treatments.
The man, with his face covered, said that he turned to the MINSA to avoid having other unsuspecting persons trust in these types of cures and going through what he's going through.
Due to this case, the victim, through his lawyer, lodged a criminal complaint before the Public Ministry against the business Panama Men's Quality OMG, Panama, which operates in Obarrio.
The lawyer of the victim, Juan Carvajal, affirmed that from the the start he advised the Public Ministry that the business was a front in which Panamanians were used, because the owners were not in Panama.
Carajal explained that the clinic offered a treatment for
ysfunction. His client turned to them for premature ejaculation problems, and they gave him an injection that produced priapism, an erection without sexual stimulation, that causes a great deal of pain and that in six to eight hours can cause cellular death. His client remained more than fifty hours in this condition.
The attorney said that before this, the clinic called Chilean urologists, who recommended sending him to an emergency room, where in a medical consultation he was avised that he would have to have his penis cut off or he would die.
He worried that the business did not have permission from the Health Counsel to operate, but did have open publicity, so he retained lawyer Carvajal.
---
Someone with a better mastery of Spanish may offer a better translation, but I saw no indication of the man's age in the Spanish article.

In an ironic sense, I guess you could say the clinic's treatment was effective. They guy isn't going to have to worry about premature ejaculation anymore.

I wonder, though, if amputation waas truly necessary. I wonder if they tried to let blood first.

Apparently it was too late, according to a story at http://www.critica.com.pa/archivo/02102 ... z1ZK4TjCGA
My translation of this article follows:
---
The amputation of a man's sexual member, presumably due to medical negligence, set off an alert among the male population of the country. Where to go and what to do when something doesn't function?
A problem of premature ejaculation led a man to Men's Quality of Panama, a clinic that advertised use of a chemical component that gives an effective and rapid solution to any sort of sexual problem.
They injected the product into the man, who still remains unknown, producing an erection lasting 50 hours. Clinically, a man can maintain erections without causing problems for a little over three hours.
Juan Carvajal, the man's lawyer, explained that his client returned to the clinic with severe pains; nevertheless, no solution was found.
When they couldn't reduce the man's erection, urologists in Chile were contacted, given that the clinic is part of an international consortium that is very important in this country and Mexico, and they said to transfer the patient to an emergency room immediately, the attorney said.
The arrival at a private hospital was delayed. A medical team evaluated the patient and determined, after doing corresponding analysis, that there was cellular death in the penis.
The sex organ had irreversible damage; it was gangrenous. There was no option. Either they would cut off the penis or the patient would lose his life.

There is a Fiction Archive story in here I can just feel it.
When we start accepting stories again, I fully expect a flood of "priapism to penectomy" themes showing up.

Maybe they used the spider venom that gives men painful erections, since it's South America. http://www.livescience.com/4429-natural ... ction.html
Wonder when they'll have this spider viagra available? Can you imagine keeping some of these spiders on hand? Honey, I can't get an erection, o.k. dear, I'll get a spider to fix you up!
Back to the poor man who lost his penis. I don't know why they didn't bleed it to relieve the pressure. Hope he wasn't a young man, this could be devastating and cause him to become suicidal. "Treatment for priapism is important, because a prolonged erection can scar the penis if not treated. The goal of treatment is to relieve the erection and preserve penile function. In most cases, treatment involves draining the blood using a needle placed in the side of the penis. Medications that help shrink blood vessels, which decreases blood flow to the penis, also may be used. In rare cases, surgery may be required to avoid permanent damage to the penis. If the condition is due to sickle cell disease, a blood transfusion may be necessary. Treating any underlying medical condition or substance abuse problem is important to preventing priapism."

This reminds me of a story plot Tim and I have been kicking around for some time now: A man's penis is banded and then injected with a substance that would be deadly if allowed into the general blood stream--snake venom, maybe, or liquid drain cleaner--or maybe he's just TOLD that it's such a substance. He then has to choose between removing the band and dying or leaving the band on and watching his penis slowly die and rot. If somebody wants to run with that ball, be our guest, as Tim and I aren't apt to get much story writing done anytime soon.
