No. Rape and war are two very different traumas in ones life. Yes they both can give you PTSD. It is what they do to the sense of self that is the difference. Today a man or woman returning from war regardless of condition is welcomed home and held in high regard. A rape victim be they woman or man lives with the shame of the rape. They live with the change the rape has on their sense of safety and trust of other people. Yes war is hell but rape is a devestating occurence that most people do not understand. When they do not understand they are not very supportive and do not want to hear about your ordeal.

I think Dave was referring to the reality / honesty of the violence, rather than any discourse on any emotional similarity between different forms of violence.

Both movies portrayed their violences in gut-wrenching honesty (truth to reality).

Sex with the wrong person even if it is NOT rape is still an ordeal...

Oh, and the milk in the movie is actually supposed to be testosterone according to Kubrick's own concept drawings:

Then Kubrick should have read the book; moloko is quite clearly heroine laced milk, and pre-treatment Alex with his excessive talk about grudies and sex has a mammary fixation.

Mr. Wilson's diatribe against homosexuality and misplaced testosterone appears in his later novel, The Wanting Seed; repeating the natural law theme of the Clockwork Orange he again complains about a permissive society's "social engineering" this time to tolerate queerness and the inevitable "natural" backlash. It's the sort of stuff Michelle Bachman would write if she were literate.

I never did make it very far into the novel. I did somewhat recently finish Riddley Walker, which was a frustrating-yet-rewarding experience. I really need to try the novel again.

The sign of a good thought provoking book (or in this case the movie) is to get people off their duffs and think, comment, and do something for the common good of all life. In that regard, Clockwork Orange was a success. This take someone with guts and vision. That people are STILL conducting dialogue on the movie does not put it in the league of Shakespeare, but who knows, in time, it could become something like that, not the same, but legendary.
