Barnens ö, Children's Island, is a 1980 Swedish movie about an eleven year-old boy that doesn't want to grow up. All the men in his life, according to him, are swine, and he doesn't want to grow up to be like them. "I'll never get a boner, and I'll never fuck," he tells himself. Everyday, he examines himself, writing down in his journal, "Not a hair on my scrotum or penis. I'm free for another day."
There is nothing about castration in the movie, but I think many on EA would identify with the movie. It's an extremely well done coming of age movie about a boy that doesn't want to come of age. There are nude scenes of the boy in the movie, but it's from a different time and from a different culture. Don't let them influence your seeing the movie one way or the other.
You can download the movie online, but you'll have to figure out how to combine the movie file with the subtitle file to understand what's going on, unless you understand Swedish. If you just watch it for the nude scenes without the subtitles, you're missing a good movie. I had downloaded it, but figuring out how to combine the subtitles with the movies seemed too much of a hassle, so I ordered the DVD. It's not currently available at Amazon, but you can find it here (http://www.cvmc.net/movie.jsp?movie_id=557).
Soon-to-turn-eleven Reine (Tomas Fryk (http://www.cvmc.net/entity.jsp?entity_id=15581)) doesn't wish to grow up, thinks puberty will make him a "swine," which is how he views the few men in his life. With his mother planning on being out of town while he is supposed to be at camp, the boy opts to ditch the bus, stays home alone for the Summer. In an attempt to raise some money for food, he meets a number of women, all of whom he grows to feel a bit romantically attached to. When they reject him, for varying reasons, our young hero hits the road, spends some time with a few scoundrels. Will a nasty ending find Reine before he can make peace with the adult world? Considered a kids' film in Sweden, this one is a unique exploration of a child's mind with a small dose of the avant garde attached; think of a mix between Lakki (http://www.cvmc.net/movie.jsp?movie_id=1867) and Tin Drum, The - Digitally Restored Version (http://www.cvmc.net/movie.jsp?movie_id=4667) and you might get the idea. Directed by Kay Pollack. It's on sale only through 05/29, after which the price more than doubles. The movie was winner of Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Film awards at the Sweden's Guldbagge Awards in 1981.
