Favorite SciFi/Fantasy Moments

Post by moi621 (imported) »

It is well known that people who appreciate the Science Fiction/Fantasy media are more intelligent.

Here is a chance to declare your intelligence and share a favorite SciFi/Fantasy moment regardless of media formats.

Multiple uploads over time are allowed as reminders happen as to me today.

Star Trek Enterprise - watching Carbon Creek Episode where three Vulcans including T'pol's great grandmother survive in 1950's coal mine country. Velcro was given to humans. Well the moment was when the three Vulcans are discussing humanity and the critic says, Humans are represented by, "alcohol, frozen fish sticks and preparing for nuclear annihilation". I laughed even though I had seen it before.

Bablyon 5, Delenn to 'can't remember which commander' - "Humans build communities." Explaining that Minbari, Narn, etc would build outposts for themselves. And then Humans are frustrated when they can't live up to their own expectations. Or something to that effect.

Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship - movie. When they were escaping the Ringwraithes and crossed the small river to safety - the flood comes in as the Rw's attempt to cross. And the foam and wall of water water appeared for a moment as a stampede of white horses. Soo out of the book and as I so as I imagined I almost stood up and applauded mid movie in the theater.

Share fav's, 🙏

Blade Runner; the scene where Deckard has just "retired" Zhora. He is shaking, and clearly not handling what he just did very well. Deckard is almost relieved when Leon finds him and tries to exact revenge.

That scene was so incredibly different from anything I had ever seen in Sci-Fi. It still moves me, and makes the whole thing feel very realistic.

Of course the ending of Blade Runner, the "Tears in rain" speech Roy Batty gives, is very moving. It really comes to express what we all must eventually go through. What will remain of all our life experiences once we are gone?

For more contemporary Sci-Fi, I'd go with the scene in Serenity, when the group is surrounded by Reavers, and it is inevitable that they are about to be overrun. Kayle finally realizes that Simon loves her and she declares, "To hell with this, I'm gonna live!"

It was a real stand up and cheer moment.

There are so many, I could go on and on. These ones are my favorites though.

I like the final scene in Dune where Muad'Dib raises his eyes to the sky and the rain begins to fall on the desert planet. Alia asks "How can this be?" and then answers with "because he is the Kwisatz Haderach".

Movies and TV never move me as much as the written word does, so my moments are from novels and short stories.

A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin, where the wizard Ged confronts his Shadow and names it with his own name. The scene profoundly affected how I confronted my own transsexuality. (I still think Le Guin's wizards are vastly more interesting than the Harry Potter books. De Gustibus I suppose)

The ending of the short story The Lady Who Sailed The Soul by Cordwainer Smith,( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cordwainer_Smith ) one of the most brilliant and fascinating of authors. I have read the story hundreds of times and I still bawl like a baby at the ending. One of the greatest love stories ever written.

"If I came then, darling, I'll come again, wherever you are. You're my darling, my heart, my own true love. You're my bravest of ladies, my boldest of people. You're my own. You sailed for me. You're my lady who sailed The Soul."

His voice broke, but his features stayed calm. He had never before seen anyone die so confident and so happy.

The story is available online. Click on the "available online" link next to the story on the Wikipedia entry.

I have had several Sci-Fi Novels hit me hard like they did for you transward.

The one that stands out is Robert A. Heinlein's Job: A Comedy of Justice

In the story, the main character travels through many parallel universes, backward and forward through time. In each new place, his only companion is the woman he is coming to love, Margrethe. Once he is inextricably separated from her, he begins a journey that will lead him to the creator of all things. He travels through Heaven, Purgatory and Hell. The book ends with these lines.

"But I have what I want. I would not want to be a saint in Heaven if Margrethe was not with me; I wouldn't fear going to Hell if she was there - not that I believe in Hell or ever stood a chance of being a saint in Heaven.

Samuel Clemens put it: 'Where she was, there was Eden. 'Omar phrased it: '- thou beside me in the wilderness, ah wilderness were paradise enow.' Browning termed it: 'Summum Bonum'. All were asserting the same great truth, which is for me:

Heaven is where Margrethe is."

Yeah, I'm a sucker for the romantic.

I like it when the big robot comes out of the space ship in "the day the earth stood still" black and white version. Good film too! I also liked All of 2001 ASO.

Heinlein's Glory Road was largely responsible for my taking up fencing, particularily epee, which I continued for the next twenty years.

Heinlein's The Cat who walked through walls.

How can she do that he asked? Because she doesn't know she can't.

I always enjoyed this Heinlein novel specifically for the ultimate resolution. When they finally "took it to a higher authority" always amused me to no end. 😄
