Behind the Curtain
MacTheWolf and I were chatting on the phone this afternoon, and we began talking about some of the many Archive members who have come and gone over the years. I decided to peek behind the scenes for a bit of information about membership. (Theres not much there, but theres a bit
.)
Theres a VERY brief bit of information about each currently registered member of the Archive, most of which also appears in the publicly (for registered members only) profile that you can access by clicking on the members name in the membership list accessed from the menu bar above or on their name under their avatar on any post. (About all that is missing is the "serial number" that Im writing about below and the email address that each of you gave when you registered so that administrators can contact you, if ever necessary.)
There are no surviving records of members during the earliest period of the Archive (since all data is purged when they cease to be members and we have no information about anyone whose membership lapsed yesterday). Some time in January of 2001, the registration system was revised to assign each member a NUMBER so that the computer could keep track of posts more easily. (The earliest preserved registration date is 11/18/1999.) All existing members at that time were assigned numbers in alphabetical order:
A-1 (id: 14) registered 1/15/2001
Bboy (id: 28) our illustrious founder, and certainly the FIRST member
Charrett (id: 72)
kristoff (id: 200)
Paolo (id: 254)
talula (id: 340)
Zoroaster (id: 387) registered 12/1/1999
After that, all new members were assigned consecutive numbers. Our latest member, as I write this post is
erweg1984 (id: 36,744)
This means that there have been a minimum of 36,744 registered members on the Eunuch Archive and hundreds of thousands of others who have accessed and read the site.
The counter on the Story Board was installed on 2/12/2001. Since then, there have been over ONE HUNDRED MILLION hits. The current rate is that someone opens a new story to read more often than once every three seconds, twenty-four hours per day!

Re: Behind the Curtain
I'm usually pretty quiet, but I could not help but reply to this. I was a "member" when the archive was running off of Brian's old Netcom account. Brian (Bboy) and I used to regularly chat on IRC, and he was always a good role player.
Ahh those were the days!
At that time I think I was the only female member, and have enjoyed seeing others come and go over time. I've also enjoyed some of the direction from fantasy to reality support.
All I can say is, keep up the good work! It is both a legacy of Bboy and his original dream, and a fertile ground for new thoughts and ideas.
Be safe everyone!

Re: Behind the Curtain
Open your profile and look to the address bar of the browser.
You will see something like this: http://eunuch.org/vbulletin/member.php?u=xxxxxx
where xxxxxx - is your number.
Re: Behind the Curtain
I was #2 for a while; we "blew up" the server several times when VB was in the very first version.
That whole ICQ conversation boiled down to "oops" again and again!
Then I was #3, #4, etc.
Gives you an idea of how many bugs were in it.
Then the manual came in German! What a bear that was.
I remember one line had a typo in it. I don't recall exactly what it said, but to some extent, it translated literally into "Don't try to throw your cherries out of a closed window."
Apparently, B. knew what that meant when I said it and was able to fix it.
Ah, the memories.

Re: Behind the Curtain
I was here a long time ago when I did not have regular access to the internet. It has been interesting seeing the numerous crashes and reincarnations of EA. --FLO--
