My translation is that Manuela Schwesig, minister of social stuff for Mecklenburg-Pomerania, recommended castration for Tiger Woods. This was a takeoff of the Columbian farmer that castrated himself when his wife started menopause.

Here’s the original Spanish article. My Spanish is good enough to struggle through it, but not good enough for a proper translation. I hope that someone else here will provide a fluent English version (and that one, or more, of our German-speaking members will provide some of the German reaction).

It’s interesting that a spokeswoman for Schwesig had to announce to the press that it was intended as a joke. Maybe it was….

I think, too, that Arab Nights missed a good opportunity when he titled this thread Recommendation, rather than Castrating the Tiger. It would have hundreds of hits by now, instead of the couple of dozen that it does.

BERLÍN (AFP) - Una ministra de la región alemana de Mecklemburgo-Pomerania recomendó a Tiger Woods la castración como método para evitar sus problemas conyugales, el pasado viernes tras el anuncio del golfista de EEUU de que se retiraba por las revelaciones sobre sus aventuras amorosas.

Manuela Schwesig, ministra de Asuntos Sociales de la región, hizo estas declaraciones en un programa de entretenimiento tras ver el reportaje de un colombiano que se había castrado él mismo con una navaja.

"Recomendaría a Tiger Woods que le imite, así quizás no tendrá problemas conyugales" dijo la ministra en el programa Das, de la cadena regional NDR.

Una portavoz del ministerio aseguró a la AFP que se trata "de una reacción en broma tras un reportaje televisivo macabro".

La superestrella del golf mundial anunció el pasado viernes que suspendía por "un tiempo indefinido" su carrera deportiva y admitió haber mantenido relaciones fuera del matrimonio.

One minister of the German region of Mcklenburg - Pomerania reccomended to Tiger Woods castration as a method for elliminating his (marriage) relationship problems, this past Friday after the announcement of the United States golfer about his retiring because of the revelations concerning his amorous adventures.

Manuela Schwesig, minister of Social Services of the region, made these declarations in an entertainment program after seeing the report by a Colombian that he had been castrated the same way with a (hunting-skinning) knife.

"I would recommend to Tiger Woods that he immitates that guy so that HE wouldn't have any relationship problems" said the minister in the program "Das" of the regional network "NDR".

A spokesman for the ministry assured the AFP she was trying "to get a reaction in jest after a (such a) macaber television report". (She was joking around.)

The superstar of world golf this past Friday said that he was suspending for "an indefinate period his sports career and admitted to having maintained other relationships outside of marriage.
