Yes this is horrible. It seems cats get the brunt of abuse by children. The nature of cats and private property don't mix.

As far as I know my Cat has been hit once with a news paper and my ex-wife just about got thrown out the window for doing it. I explained that this was Rupert's house not hers, different rules and never ever bring harm to any animal ever. The worst my kids, (Rupert the Cat and Nelly the dog) get is scolded which they sometimes pay attention to what I am saying, sometimes. They have me trained real well. I know just what they want and get it for them. Both spoiled rotten as it should be.

I don't agree with animal abuse.

I don't agree with anyone who feels that 'animal rights' take precedence over human rights.

Sticking duct tape all over a cat, just for the perverse pleasure of doing it, is animal abuse.

Dissecting fruit flies in a school classroom, for the purpose of genuine education, is animal use.

Eating pieces of cattle, pigs or sheep (or chickens, or frogs, or snails, whatever) is animal consumption.

Holier-than-thou observing of animals in the process of copulation (or any other natural animal process) is animal voyeurism.

Sitting on the back of an animal that doesn't want to be sat upon (eg, in the context of a rodeo, or an American football game) is animal taunting.

Shooting animals (with gun or bow or crossbow - or even with poison dart from a blowpipe) is OK provided [a] you truly honour the animal that you shoot, you fully intend to make full and proper use of the animal's fur and flesh, and [c] you NEED to use it.

(OK, if you're shooting pests the rules are different. But who decides what is a 'pest'?)

The little turd who abused the aforementioned cat may, perhaps, be less culpable than the big turds who should have brought him up with a proper respect for animal life. Nevertheless, he's culpable.

I have an air rifle. And I've used it, while fully respecting the 'laws' and the views I've tried to expound above.

I sympathize with the parent stuck with a 2 year old doing the insistent 2 year old routine at, say the grocery store. I do not believe one can reason with a 2 year old and a butt slap is indicated. But, then it becomes a, public thing. Someone will probably call the police, blah, blah.

Likewise, cats may get insistent. Sometimes, "No!" works. Sometimes saying "Get" cowboy style and they run away. But, when they get real persistent, the old yellow water pistol is required. Some may say the old yellow water pistol is abusive and I should totally tolerate my cats or reason with them. Well when "No" and "Get" don't work, repeatedly, . . . .

I've been stuck with that... 2,3 and 4 year olds, even older trying to get their way or be miserable. Their problem with me is that I am willing to turn my back and ignore them or wave goodbye and move out of their line of sight or just plain say no, out loud. I don't hit. I don't have to scream or yell. I remove attention from those kids and tell them why. Cures them, every time.

I used to say to one kid, "If you gotta ask you can't have it" when he started the question "Uncle can I..." he never got to finish. I got evil looks from passersby but I didn't care.

And As much as I don't care for cats, I would never hurt one or tolerate it being hurt.

On Cats, I too have never liked cats, for one they make me itch but only the Tabby kind. In my life I have had a couple cats but not for long and we always had several other animals, they never had the solo spot until I went to my daughters house one day and she had gotten two kittens. A brother and sister, well the little girl was scared of her shadow and hid the male was into everything full of kitten, the problem was at night he still wanted to play and would end up scratching the baby's while they were asleep, my daughter said, he must go. I don't even like cats but I said if she was really going to get rid of him I would give him a try. Two days later Tigger came into my house. Two months later his true name came out, Rupert. I have had many pets in my life and my first dog Tiny and Rupert are in that tie for first place as to which I love the most. We now have a little dog, she is smaller then Rupert and she came home on approval, Rupert approved and we now are three. Both the kids sleep on the bed, or the two of them sleep in my recliner together, neither pay any attention to me as even the dog is learning that as its true Cats have staff Dogs can have staff too. I think its a plot. Both kids are 6 years old and both are totally part of my life. Oh yes, did I say that Rupert is a gray tabby.
