Money well spent?

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) -- A Swedish university has received $590,000 in research funds to measure the greenhouse gases released when cows belch.

About 20 cows will participate in the project run by the Swedish University for Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala, about 40 miles north of Stockholm, officials said Monday.

Cattle release methane, a greenhouse gas believed to contribute to global warming, when they digest their food. Researchers believe the level of methane released depends on the type of food the eat.

Project leader Jan Bertilsson said that the cows involved in the study will have different diets and wear a collar device measuring the methane level in the air around them.

He said 95 percent of the methane released by cows comes out through the mouth.

"This type of research is already being conducted in Canada so we will be in contact with Canadian agricultural researchers in the near future," he said.

The research will be funded by a grant from the government's Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning.

You should see how much methane I let loose after a bean and cheese burrito!

According to a report I saw on BBC News, a cow produces more greenhouse gasses than the average automobile.

As I see it, we have three choices:

(1) Give up beef and milk and kill all the cows

(2) Give up our automobiles and kill the CEO's of Ford, Chrysler and GM.

(3) Develop a new alternative fuel source that doesn't emit greenhouse gasses as a side effect (electricity, hydrogen fuel cells, or fuel from corn)

THough #2 sounds more entertaining, I'd say #3. Though it would never get through Congress since the Big Three auto companies and the OIl prodiucers own our Congress lock, stock and barrel.

#3 is definitely out.

I have an E85 vehicle, and I WILL NOT use the stuff anymore.

At rate of fuel economy LOSS with ethanol - at least from corn - E85 must sell for 25%-30% cheaper than straight gas.

Here, it doesn't. It's comparable to gas, only a few cents lower - and the damn plant that makes the shit is like 10 miles down the road!

My last calculations show that were I to use ethanol fuel, I would have a 20% INCREASE in my fuel bill for the week - and I go through about 50 gallons/week already.

On the highway in good weather, I get about 20 mpg on gas.

With E85 - 14, sometimes less...

You do the math.

They can take their E85 and shove it up their collective ass.

I'm much for the idea of killing CEO's - company notwithstanding.

Oh! It gets Better!

I read in the newspaper, this morning, that some Japanese researchers have come up with a food additive for cattle that almost completely eliminates the methane that comes up when the cattle belch. Apparently, the Swedes were right, most of the methane comes out when cows belch while chewing their cuds, not when they fart as most people would find logical. Of course, the Japanese did not make this announcement until they had obtained patents on the food additive in the US, UK, EU and Japan.

Hey! I wonder if it works for people? Maybe it could be used to eliminate those occasional, embarrassing farts during oral sex.

Total agreement! My own calculations show that my monthly fuel bill would escalate from the current $950 to $1425. My efficiency already sucks with the use of 87 octane and 10% ethanol (that's the mandated minimum here in all gas in the metro area - 10%). And on the periodic occasion when I drive the ambulance, I dont want any sludge corn oil diesel fuel in there either - doesn't burn good when I do highway runs at 90 mph sans patients (I am usually running implants and instruments - never patients).

Fuck ethanol and burning dinner in the tank. (If your gonna do it, do it with other stuff, not food; someone somewhere needs it to eat.)

If you don't drive over 200 miles a day then THIS (http://www.teslamotors.com/) is JUST what you need. IT DOES NOT BURN GAS, HYDROGEN, etc...

OR, if the price tag is too high, then maybe you should wait until Dodge goes through with THIS! (http://news.windingroad.com/concept-car ... auto-show/)

ACTUAL PICTURES... (http://techon.nikkeibp.co.jp/english/NE ... 21/145816/) SHARP, huh? :D

Zeo Video HERE... (http://www.truveo.com/tag/Chrysler%20ZEO)

Israel intends to "WIPE OUT" oil... (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/01/22 ... r_project/) Muzzle 'em in Arab land... 😄

Not convinced? How about a nice little Hybrid? (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1200278 ... lenews_wsj)

You know, it is about time we looked at this creatively. How many of you drive more than 200 miles a day? If you don't the technology is out there that will allow you to NEVER buy another gallon of gas or quart of oil.

I am not sure if that was Money well spent or not.

Here in Wisconsin (the dairy state) there was a report on this guy that captures all the methane which is then funneled to a holding tank, the droppings are also processed and the final products are Electricity which is used on the farm and the rest sold to the local power company. Bedding for the cows made from what is left over from there droppings. Cost the farmer about a Million but he said he will make it all back within 20 years.

Money well spent.

While a electric car seems to be an attractive alternitve enviormentaly what most Greenies do not realize all it does is offset the source of the pollution from a car to a electric powerplant that burns coal and oil. Never mind nukes as a source as the Feds will NEVER release the technology used in submarine reactors that are small household refrigerator size safe no meltdowns possible due to design and only need refueling once in 30 years. Until every home has a wind turbine and solar collector to recharge the electrics they will not be a true ZEV but a OEV (offset emissions vehicle). a sad fact but true when you look at the big picture. By the way did you know the majority of Smog here in the North east comes from Stack gases from the Midwest? Truth UNH and MIT did a study back in the early 90's. Now here's the kikcer that pissed off a ton of New Englanders we were forced to adopted Ca. Car emission rules to reduce the smog here....WTF?? The plants out west well they bought emission credits and well they still dump crap that fouls New england Air and water.
