For a bit now when I enter my Yahoo mail, I often get a red warning from Web Security Guard that YIELDMANAGER.com is trying to download code. Rarely it never happens, sometimes it is a real pain in the ass because every time it comes up with every move I make within Yahoo email. Most of the time it comes up a few times in the course of an email session. People do not seem to be getting viri from my emails. I sent a email to Yahoo asking what it was. I got back a response to the tune that I had picked up a virus somewhere. But it never happens with Gmail, only on Yahoo and only within email.

Anybody know anything or have suggestions?

I've never experienced anything like that at yahoo mail. But it is a big possibility that there is a virus floating around, especially if you have photos connected to that account. A ton of viruses are transmitted by them.

before we can help you, please attempt the following, these will help us eliminate the easy spyware problems first, making

the serious fix, as short as possible...

1: Please download Ad-aware (http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045 ... tag=button)and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Also go Here (http://download.lavasoft.de.edgesuite.n ... leaner.exe)to download the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize (http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm#adaware) the settings in Ad-aware at for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button.Install any updates that are available.

Now click Mode menu and choose 'Advanced Mode'. Next click on Immunize to your left. Click the Immunize button (green cross) on top to Immunize your computer - you should do this each time there is an update. Now go to Tools->Resident and make sure that TeaTimer is checked. What this will do is monitor any system/registry changes and will ask you for permission to change any of these settings.

Now click on the 'Spybot-S&D' option on the top left to go back to the main screen. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the 'Fix Selected Problems' button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix (http://majorgeeks.com/download4392.html)and install it over the current Spybot installation.

Currently Yahoo is the ISP of choice of spammers and malware spreaders as they are doing very little to stop this on thier services. I recive at least ten spam and infected malware e-mails from Yahoo addresses a day. Fortunatly my system catches and zaps them.

A good place to get these and other anti-malware software and even free good Anti-Virus software is C-net.com. Tons of them from freeware to share ware and commercial pay programs on the site.

Another thing that is tops on list to stop damage is to go to Microsofts download site and run the most recent anti malware software there.

Spybot is great but misses some malware but immunizes against thousands. A good addtion to it is Pest Patrol a pay program not free like Spybot S&D it gets updated almost dailey but does not immunize your system.

Make sure your firewall is on.

Before running these the first time turn off system restore as it will back up the nasty malware and reinstall it. After cleaning your sytem turn it back on.

If you have Vista make sure defender is turned on along with the auto updater.

If your running a Mac well you are far more vunerable in this way because Macs are kind of second fiddle not to many anti malware programs are out there for you But do check Apples download page there are about 100 anti virus and spam programs there, believe it or not most of these are built into Microsoft XP and Vista OS's from square one why Apple doesn't is beyond me.

Not trashing any system here if it works for you great. Just don't trash what I run deal?

And no matter your system ANY computer can be malwared and virused and hijacked company hype is just that...hype.

Well, as far as I know - MacOSX is а BSD Unix from inside, so, if designed correctly (never checked really, had not good enough machine to install it and check), it is really much less vulnerable to viruses and malware then windows products. Only Vista changed some things, by reinventing parts of unix .

I may be wrong in judging the security of OsX. But I had run a *nix (linux) machine with internet ip-address for 2 years and had not had any problem with malware/viruses.

On security of windows vs *nix - I had run a network of windows machines (linux server + 5 labs with ~12 machines each). I remember going all the way from win95 to win xp sp2. And there was always the problem of viruses. Why? Because antivirus company was too late in updating. It was easier to reinstall machines at the end of the term, than to protect.

In september 2007 we switched to linux. No problems with viruses so far.

As for YIELDMANAGER.com as far as I know - it is advertisement service, which I blocked by AdBlock in firefox long-long ago...

PS. Any system can be hacked, some just easier then others.

Thanks guys. I followed Paolo's suggestions and ended the particular issue. Now I will wait to see the consequences of what I've done. There always are unintended consequences to everything - sometimes good, sometimes not so good. Here are some observations for the fellow computer retards. For Ad-aware, look at the second click to download. The first one is a teaser. You download it and run it. Then it says it will fix 20 of 535 faults. The second one which says free in small letters is what worked. The Here line

doesn't go anywhere. I think I got myself thru the Spybot exercise OK.

I am still clunky on computers. I took a couple of hours today to meander my way thru this whole thing. But that is what Sunday mornings are for.

I have to agree with you. I have been running Macs for years and have used every OS since 6.x. In all that time I have never had a problem with a virus.... EVER. I have had some problems with anti virus software such as McAfee and Norton messing things up so I run nothing at all.

The only precautions I take are that I don't download anything if I don't know where it came from. That cuts down my exposure by about 90%. If there is some thing suspicious that I can't verify, AND if I absolutely have to download it, I do so on a non-critical Mac and check it out there first. Finally most viruses are written for PCs so between being careful and choosing to run a fairly non targeted OS system I don' have much trouble.

The only trade off for me is that some of the plugins I would like to run with my CGI software don't run on a Mac, but I can live with that.

The biggest problem I ever have on line is when I go to website that opens up window after window while I am closing window after window. Oh hate those guys.
