I wish they had only known

I'm a little slow getting around to it, but I am finally watching the 20/20 program about transgendered children. This is a very well done program. I wish my parents had the information and caring 50 years ago that these parents have now for their children. Had they known what my problem was and how to fix it, I could have had lived my girlhood and grown into the, almost, woman that I wish I could be. It's so wonderful that these children can grow up being the gender that they want to be. They don't have to go through the trauma of changing after so many years of living a lie. I want to cry.

I agree! It's great that we're finally coming (far too slowly) to realize that sex and gender are much more complicated than just the external plumbing system. There are so many factors involved that there are more possible combinations than humans who have ever lived. We'll all be a lot happier when we stop trying crunch everyone into two pigeonholes of "male" and "female" based on what the nurse sees at birth.

Yes, highly inaccurate, peeking between Baby's legs to diagnose sex.

Back in the 90's, we did a series of copywork of large 8x10 transparencies (giant slides) for a local med lab. They were of babies, and close-ups of genitals. The whole project was on sexual birth defects, intersexual births, etc. The doctor asked us to guess the sex of each baby, cute little devils...

We got them all wrong, and he had the DNA printouts to prove it.

"But that IS a boy!" I said.

"That's what we thought, until 'he' was like 2, and had a blood test," he replied.

Amazing.

its not so much as sex as identity. girls and boys know the difference between themselves, even at a very early age. Its not sexual yet, but a part of who they are.
