rest in peace??

Post by wolverine1 (imported) »

As silly as this may sound, i'm starting this thread to get these feelings 'off my chest'... it saddens me greatly that the dead do not appear to rest easy - especially if the person was famous beforehand...

I was watching 'My Own Private Idaho' last week and it suddenly occurred to me that River Phoenix had passed away over 13 years ago and unlike say, James Dean, we very rarely hear his name these days... Being a total film addict I decided i'd like a decent pic of one of my favourite stars! simple huh?

well after entering his name for to carry out an image via the web, I was heartbroken that one of the first (!?!) images that came up on my search was a picture of him lying in his coffin !?!?!

Is it me or is that just completely sick?? It seems that some people have no respect for the dead (or their families) and will happily exploit it to their twisted ends !? 😠, and before anyone says it - it's not news ; this happened a long time ago... :(

another example is Princess Diana... she has been gone 10 years now and yet we still have people exploiting the details... i've just watched the news on channel 4 and find the plans to show her immediately following the accident absolutely disgusting... why can't society just let them rest in peace?

apologies for rambling, but as i said, I had to get it off my chest...

No need to apologize to me, I am with you all the way on this one. I hope you feel better having shared your frustrations with the attitude of the popular media.

You can expect no real compassion from them, they share non of your human attributes in relation to bereavement and respect, they cower under the umbrella of public information yet grow fat on the fallout of others missery. I have nothing but contempt for what they say and do.

I totally agree with you Wolverine. I generally ignore all the sensationalism around someone's death, famous or not. I've seen River in a few movies and his brother Joaquin, who I believe won't publicly discuss his brother's death, which I applaud him for. I first became interested in River's work after Joaquin's excellent portrayl of the emperor Commodus in "Gladiator".

I disagree. Out of curiosity, after reading this post, I went looking for the picture. It wasn't one of the first pictures I found, and I had to click on a link that had a warning attached to it. I think EVERYTHING should be accessible on the Internet. That's what makes it the great tool that it is. No one is forcing anyone to go look at the picture, nor did I find anything disrespectful to River Phoenix, whom I always liked, by the way.

If this picture upset Wolverine, he shouldn't have mentioned it. I wouldn't have ever seen it, otherwise, and I wonder why he looked at it, if he objected so much to its being posted.

Why, too, would anyone internalize something like this, a picture taken over thirteen years ago? I don't sympathize at all with Wolverine. I think he's trying to find something to be unhappy about. Hell, live and enjoy your life. Don't go looking for something to upset you. If you look hard enough, you'll find it.

You are right on the money. If I go look up a person on the net I don't want to see the blood and gore of there demise. I know some like that shit but I sure don't. I don't want to see Diana's broken body, or JFK missing half his head. I want to see these people as they were when they were alive.

hey man... miaow! believe me when I say that I definitely DON'T need to go out looking for things to depress me or make me miserable - I work as a nurse looking after the elderly... a lot of my patients are terminal so breaking the news to families that their loved has died is still hard to to and can be depressing enough on it's own, without anything else to help it along! and before anyone says it - I DO love my job, but I wouldn't be human if I said that it never affected me ; the one thing I don't do is ever let is show to my patients/their relatives as that would be completely unprofessional and uncaring.

which brings me back to my original point - no one will ever convince me that exploiting someone who's dead is in any way acceptable. Just to highlight my original comment - I wanted a decent pic of River, right? so go to google and type in 'River Phoenix' under an image search and then you'll see that the 10th pic is from a site called 'findadeath.com'!?!

That is just F*cking twisted and not something I ever wanted to see in any way/shape/form! The reason for the post was to air my views which, fair enough, not everybody will agree with but in no way will I ever be convinced that everything should be accessible to everyone - there should be at least some boundaries of decency left...

I know what yer saying slammr about 'look hard enough and ye shall find', but I wasn't looking for that and I think we're just gonna haveta agree to disagree on this subject

slammr, my friend who was abused by her daddy, would u like to check if there are any naked pics of her on the net? I mean everything should be accesible right? if you die and end up on a slab being dissected, its ok for them to take pics and post them on the net? its ok to take pics of people you hate and post them on the net or who *you* think are unnatractive? its ok to write about anyone and say anything,.

no thats the fucking trouble with the internet.

---[ EDITED TO REMOVE PERSONAL RECRIMINATION]--- What happened to people having feelings and caring?
