George the W has once again boggled the mind
George the W has once again boggled the mind.
During the State of the Union speech, Dubya promised an all-out campaign for energy independence and reduction of use of imported oil. (That statement, itself, requires a bit of parsing.) To amplify his point, he had his minions arrange for him to make a speech in a controlled venue with invited audience, etc. The subject of the speech was the need for fuel conservation.
Dubya walked from the White House to Marine 1, a Sikorsky Sea Stallion helicopter. Marine 1 flew to Andrews Air Force Base. Dubya rode in a limo from Marine 1 to Air Force 1, a Boeing 747SP. (There are other aircraft designated "Air Force 1." They are Boeing 767s, but Dubya refuses to use them because they are "too little" for him). Air Force 1 flew 160 km to the venue of the speech. Dubya rode to the auditorium in a motorcade of 12 cars. Speech lasted 18 minutes. Dubya rode back to Air Force 1 in the motorcade. Air Force 1 flew 160 km to Andrews AFB. Marine 1 flew Dubya back to the White House. Dubya walked home.
You think he misses the point?

John Kerry also calls for less gas consumption. But he does not own a car that gets over 20 mpg, nor does his wife.

Two part answer, first to become energy independent and reduce imported oil. His plan is to open up Alaska, watch for it, he has already got one bill through.
As for using Marine 1, Air Force 1 etc. yes, I have no problem with that, none. Remember that day in November 1963, as much as I dislike dubya we must provide this for our leaders.

Huh...
You'd a-though that he would have activated an SR-71 blackbird so that it could be air force one... then nobody could keep up with him. Those things will do 10,000 mph.

"W" is also promoting the use of ethanol to cut down on imported oil. That's more to get the farmer's vote than anything else. Ethanol is not a solution, not the way it's produced now, anyway. For one, it takes about as much energy to produce it as it supplies when it's burned. And, since they make it from corn, producing it raises the price of food, not just corn, but also the price of meat, since corn is used for feed. Too, because just so much land is available for raising food, farmers aren't going to grow the other things unless they can obtain higher prices for them. Why should they, if they can make more money growing corn? Ethanol isn't going to be a viable fuel alternative until they can produce it from stalks and grasses that would otherwise go to waste.

Regrettably, one of the folks who was so good at understanding and de-com-boggling the George, and pointing out all of the more curiouser queeerks of the Shrub, has passed today. So long Molly Ivans, I'll miss your wonderful writing.

There is a very fine tribute to Molly Ivins at
http://www.thoughttheater.com/2007/01/m ... _at_62.php
She was one of my heros for all of the wonderful things she has done over the years. The web page has a link to a wonderful example of her political wit titled "Dildo Diaries". Watch it all the way to the end! The last line will have you on the floor.
She will be greatly missed.

Yeah,
I will miss Molly, too. She was such a great writer. I didn't always agree with her politics, but I enjoyed her wit, humor and superb writing.
Just think, in Heaven, the must have a GREAT newspaper. Now they have Molly Ivans AND Mike Royko (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Royko).
