For the Diabetics of EA

I know there are a few of us here with diabetes, and I've discovered a couple of Yahoo groups to lurk in. Rather than try and sort out email to those I know who would be interested, I thought I'd just post some links.
Sometimes certain groups are not too easy to find, either.
I know that not everyone is thrilled with Yahoo, but after mentioning one to Kristoff, I thought I would post some links so that anyone who is interested can decide on whether to join the groups or not. I mean, it never hurts to have too many contacts and you might learn something new and useful!
A few from the list:
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/diabeticmen/
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Diabetes_Type2/
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/diabetesworld/
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Type-2-Diabetes/
The first one looks pretty new and only has like 10 members.
The next seems more friendly and open.
The next sees not a whole lot of activity.
The last has more activity and more members.

Thanks Paolo. I will be checking out the links. Good info and good support are important. As soon as I am feeling up to it I will work on being compliant.

Hey, Two, it is always too late to start being compliant at some later time - know what I mean? It always gets put off. Like me and exercise. (Damned, busted myself.) Being compliant really isnt that hard once we figure out how to be, and get habituated. For me it was largely a matter of changing eating patterns, and of course what you eat. Sometimes easier said than done. OTOH, it gave me a great opportunity to try new foods and new ways of cooking. Compliance can also be exciting that way. Bon (Petit) Appetit.

It can be hard getting the exercise in, especially in bad weather, or if you have an indoor job. One thing that I do is when I get a chance, I can get up and make a couple laps around the building. If nothing else, just getting up and moving around the office helps.
Diabetic or not, eunuch or eunuch-level hormones or not, you can't just sit around and expect things to get better!

Exercise and diet are very important. But both can be easy if you just don't even think about it. Riverwinds pancakes for example throw my sugar off the chart, but me only has them once ever 6 months or so (with sugar-free syrup). Quiznos (sp?) sandwiches do also, but subway does not. Much of it is identification.
Also let us not forget your body needs to adjust to several things. At one time if me was at 91 it was shaking time. Now 64 will get me started. Once you get used to it you might find that you no longer need your medication and you can slow down on the frequency of blood testing.
My A1C is currently at 5.6 and used the medication maybe twice a week which disturbed the nurse over at the clinic. But I told her why should it be taken when your sugar is at 80 and she agreed.
Doctor is happy, me is happy, you can be too. Just takes time and it will be like you never had diabeties.
Things I stay away from:
Anything with high concentrations of sugar
Most salad dressings
Anything but small amounts of potatoes
Quiznos (sp?)
Most fried foods
Donuts (except for the plain ones and danishes)
Fruit Juice.
Things I do eat:
Most of anything that does not fit in the categories above.
Vegetables (raw or cooked. Not sure about corn yet)
Italian, Vinegar and oil, or lime juice for salads.
An occational candy, but not ones me does not like or are concentrated sugar
Lots of fish.
The list goes on.
Just resolve that you will beat the diabeties, rather than it beat you and all is well

T., those sound like great numbers!
My doctor looked at my first blood and urine tests and sighed and told me that according to what he was reading, I was already dead and just hadn't fallen over yet.

It was a rough December and I am an emotional eater. I am fairly compliant but I do need to cut out the chocolate chip cookies washed down by Chardonay. I did lose weight working in retail during the holidays. Lots of fast walking and carrying heavy boxes. Just recently diagnosed and with the big food holidays behind us I will get focused. I plan on having better eating habits for the next years festivities. Oh and thinner and in better physical condition.
