Banding tools and extra bands are stock items at these stores. $22.89 at TSC (includes 3 or 4 bands with the device) and a similar price at RK. Extra bands are $16.89 for 100 bands at TSC, similar pricing at RK.
I did find banding devices for sale on the Web. Just Google "Burdizzo." The terms bander and Burdizzo seem to be interchangeable despite the fact that these are dissimilar devices.
At TSC and RK, I did find many books and pamphlets on animal husbandry that include castration information. From what I have read, the Burdizzo is somewhat out of favor versus the use of a bander, but both are mentioned as ways to castrate farm animals such as sheep and cattle.
As for the use of a bander on a human, I will recommend against it's use due to the damage to tissue and the resulting danger of infection. However, if you are determined to use such a device, then the size suitable for sheep would be a good choice. (I only saw one size at TSC and it looked big enough.) Basic instructions given in the various books that I read, all recommend a Tetanus booster shot be given. Since a barnyard is not a sterile environment, that sounds like a wise precaution.
Banding seems pretty simple if you are determined to try it. Place the band on the prongs of the tool and then press the handles to expand it fully. Grasp the testicles and pull away from the body to be sure the cords are fully stretched. Insert both testicles through the band (do them one at a time if the opening isn't large enough) and then allow the band to contract around the cords (not the testicles). After several hours, the testicles will be dead, but the band is supposed to be left in place for the 2 or 3 weeks for the dead tissue to wither and fall off.
The testicles will go numb almost immediately, but the cords will be very painful. According to what I read, the sheep will be stunned for a few minutes, but then it will recover and run off as if nothing happened. Yeah, right. That doesn't square with what I had happen to me when I tried it. After 45 minutes I had to cut the band off as the pain was too much to take. 45-minutes wasn't enough time to do permanent damage. In any case, be prepared for an embarrassing and expensive trip to the Emergency Room.
Don't do this at home.
