September

I see on the weather channel that there is a storm this weekend which is a lot like a winter storm in the north central part of the country, so I guess the people there have no doubts that there has been a change of season.
The storm apparently will be somewhat worse than the usual autumn weather is, but for myself September is probably my favorite month. The weather gets cooler most places, but not cold, the days are still as long as the nights, and twilight lasts a long time and has a nice glow because the sun sets at a lower angle to the horizon than in summer. Despite the current storm, this is probably the best season to go on vacation to the lake country in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and even Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
Then, of course, some of the leaves start to turn in September. If you have fruit trees, the fruit is probably ripe, and in some parts of the country a lot of what grows in the garden is ready to harvest. Nice to go out walking in the woods in autumn with your mate of a number of years, also with the kids, if they can keep quiet.
I remember I always liked to go back to school in September, even though it was fun to have free time in the summer. And of course the fall quarter in college was always the best one. Fall semester, for most students today, I guess. Thinking about starting school in September reminds me of what it was like to be young.
Then there are a lot of songs about September. I remember going to a production of The Fantastiks once, about this time of year, and hearing, "Try to Remember." Then there is "September Song" by Peter, Paul, and Mary, and also Frank Sinatra. "Autumn Leaves" may be about a time later in the fall, but it also makes me think of September.
Of course, if you're in the north, you also have to start doing things to get ready for winter, this time of year. But the thing to do is to enjoy the autumn while it lasts.
