Searching for eunuch(s)
Google has a new service open for Beta testing termed Google Trends. You can enter any search term and the computer will tell you the top ten sources for searchs of that term since the beginning of 2004, with separate searches for language of search, country of origin for the search and city of search origin. Singular and plural words can easily have quite different results. Below are the TOP TEN CITIES of origin of searchs for the terms given.
EUNUCH
1. Dortmund, Germany
2. Chennai, India
3. Delhi, India
4. Mumbai, India
5. Hannover, Germany
6. Vienna, Austria
7. Hamburg, Germany
8. Frankfurt Am Main, Germany
9. Stuttgart, Germany
10. Sydney, Australia
EUNUCHS
1. Mumbai, India
2. Chennai, India
3. Delhi, India
4. San Francisco, USA
5. New York, USA
6. Chicago, USA
7. Sydney, Australia
8. Los Angeles, USA
9. London, UK
10. Toronto, Canada
Included in the original search at www.google.com/trends is a bar graph showing the relative frequency of search for each of the locations. If you run two search terms separated by a comma, it will give the top ten of the first listed term with bar graphs in one color and with them bar graphs showing the relative frequency of searchs for the second (or third) term for those same ten locations. Running eunuch, eunuchs gives different results than running eunuchs, eunuch.
I know that I have a lot to think about with just these first searches that I have done. As members of the Archive get interesting results for any searches that they run, please post them here. Please discuss any interesting eunuch-related data that you come across.
Why do residents of Dortmund search the term eunuch on Google more than the residents of any other city in the world? Why do German and Indian cities make up eight of the top ten cities of origin for search on that term?
I've also searched "castrate" and "castration" with interesting results....

It probably has something to do with how they learnt to speak english, plus regional and cultural influences.

Or perhaps that there are a million (assuming accurate numbers) hijra (eunuchs) in India, and they are a much more common and "accepted" "genre" (if you will) in India.... As for Germany, maybe they just realize they need it more? (JUST KIDDING, PLEASE)....

Re: Searching for eunuch(s)
It is an interesting table of results. I'm glad to see London in at least one of the charts for 'eunuchs'. One could gather all sorts of views from the list but we must remember that what it reflects is simply word searches made by people, usually I guess at home on their private PCs. One could argue that this information ought not to be collected at all.
As for Germans being so well represented maybe it reflects a more open and thoughtful attitude to all aspects of sexuality among Germans and a greater interest in emasculation as a PC search subject, at least. One doesn't need a PC to tell you that Continental Europeans generally have much more accepting attitudes today than you'll find elesewhere.
Google also have a tool called Google Search which will send to your chosen e-mail address articles and links which have come up into the PC airwaves each day. I use this and it brings up some suprising results too. Opening hyperlinks though requires care. Look at the originators message closely and ensure that your PC is set to clear your cache of cookies and stop unwanted Java downloads.

I think you're probably about the openness of Europeans - and especially Germans - to topics related to sexuality. I think I once read that Germans are the world's largest per capita consumers of porn. Interestingly, USans were 2nd. I've also had some of my best correspondence re the subject of castrations with Germans.

Re: Searching for eunuch(s)
Google has now made it possible to find the number of searchs that have been made for ANY of a set of search terms. This allows, for example, to find the number of searches that have been made for either eunuch OR eunuchs. The results are returned, not as a total number of searches made, but as the percentage of ALL Google searches made from that city or region. That is what they term normalized and it means that a small city with an overwhelming interest in the search term can come in higher that a far larger city where it is less commonly (though more often, in total numbers) searched.
Here are the results for two pairs of search terms as of today, October 3, 2006. Listed first for each is the
Any thoughts about reasons for this distribution would certainly be of interest. Why, for example, are residents of Singapore so interested in eunuch/eunuchs? Where are the Singapore members of the Eunuch Archive?

es interesting that the U.S. is only seventh in frequency in searchs for eunuch/eunuchs. Second is the city of origin for searchs. A higher percentage of all Google searches originating in Mumbai are for eunuch/eunuchs than is true for any other city on earth. For castrate/castration, Atlanta, Georgia is the city most likely to search for information.

Re: Searching for eunuch(s)
Most of a year on, there are some minor, but interesting, changes in the frequency of searches. Remember the figures are not for total number of searches, but for searches as a percentage of all searches from either the country or city.
Google searches for EUNUCH or EUNUCHS
Countries
INDIA retains its position as the country with the most frequent searchs for either of these terms. SINGAPORE drops completely out of the top 10, from its 2006 postion as number 2. NEW ZEALAND moves up from 3rd to 2nd position in frequency of searches. Poland is the only new country in the top 10.
The full list of the top ten, with previous ranking in parentheses:
1 India (1)
2 New Zealand (3)
3 Austria (6)
4 Australia (5)
5 Germany (4)
6 United Kingdom (10)
7 United States (7)
8 Poland (new)
9 Canada (9)
10 Switzerland (8)
Cities
Only four of the top ten cities from 2006 retained a place in the top ten for 2007. Dropping off the list were New Delhi (#3 in 2006), Dallas, TX (10), and four cities in Germany Dortmund (5), Hanover (6), Nurnberg (7), and Hamburg (9).
1 Mumbai (2)
2 Chennai, India (1)
3 Delhi, India (4)
4 Vienna
5 Sydney
6 Brisbane
7 Melbourne
8 Frankfurt Am Main (8)
9 Chicago
10 London
Google searches for CASTRATE or CASTRATION
Countries
New Zealand (#2 in 2006) and Ireland (4) dropped off the list, to be replaced by the Netherlands and Germany in positions 9 and 10. France retains its position as the country which most frequently does Google searchs for castrate or castration.
1 France (1)
2 Australia (5)
3 United Kingdom (6)
4 Canada (7)
5 United States (3)
6 Belgium (8)
7 Switzerland (10)
8 India (9)
9 Netherlands (new)
10 Germany (new)
Cities
Both Philadelphia (#5 in 2006) and Dallas (7) dropped out of the top ten, as did three cities in the U.K. Manchester (3), Birmingham (4), and Brentford (9). Paris moved from 6th to first and Atlanta, Georgia dropped from #1 to #10.
1 Paris (6)
2 Montreal (10)
3 Melbourne (2)
4 Seattle (8)
5 London (new)
6 Sydney (new)
7 San Francisco (new)
8 Chicago (new)
9 Los Angeles (new)
10 Atlanta (1)
Does anyone here have any ideas about why any of these shifts have occurred??? Why are Paris and Montreal the cities where people are most likely to search for castrate or castration on the Internet? Why have four German cities become so much less likely to search for eunuch or eunuchs? Or, is it just that the Australians have become much more likely to search for them?
