Sisters call for pervert brother's castration

Two sisters of a local man who helped run a global child porn ring say a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence won't be enough to protect society from their pervert brother.

The Crown and defence are jointly recommending 49-year-old Carl Treleaven be jailed for three and a half years after he pleaded guilty last month to distributing child porn.

"He should go to jail for a hell of a lot longer than that," said Coleen Moore, 51, Treleaven's older sister.

"Ten years would be too short. As far as I'm concerned there's only one thing they should do to him and that's physical castration."

Moore and Cindy Roncin, Treleaven's younger sister, say the courts shouldn't treat their brother's child porn conviction as a first offence because of his history of molesting children.

Treleaven, who was arrested Jan. 26 when cops raided his Edmonton home and found 20 gigabytes of explicit child porn on his computer, was an administrator in an Internet chatroom known as a hub for people trading child porn.

City cops have said there's no evidence that any local children were depicted in the porn, and Treleaven isn't accused of making any of it.

The chatroom trades in pictures showing the violent rape of real children and babies - at least one of whom was a newborn with the umbilical cord still attached.

Internet crimes Crown prosecutor Steven Bilodeau said while 10 years is the maximum sentence for distributing child porn, Treleaven is likely to get less because it's his first conviction for distributing child porn.

His crime could warrant a longer sentence if he'd been selling the porn or if he hadn't pleaded guilty, said Bilodeau.

Roncin, 41, called that "preposterous" and said her brother should be declared a dangerous offender.

"They're not looking at his past. The court should be looking at his past, not just the picture that's in front of them. This man should not be allowed in society."

Treleaven's criminal record includes convictions for indecent assault and gross indecency - both assaults on little girls during the 1970s.

City police say the investigation that led to Treleaven's arrest began in May 2005 after a man was arrested and charged with child porn offences in Edmonton.

EPS detectives were made aware of others actively distributing child porn.

Undercover Toronto cops monitoring the chatroom in November 2005 targeted Treleaven and traced his Internet address to a Shaw Cable account in Alberta.

Treleaven, a married father of grown children, was sharing large amounts of child porn including incest, bestiality and rape, said agreed facts filed at his sentencing.

Treleaven told cops he looked at porn showing the rape of children "to make the feelings go away" and "so that he wouldn't hurt anybody," said the agreed facts.

Moore, who lives in rural Alberta, said she was ostracized by her family about two decades ago, after she finally blew the whistle on Treleaven. Moore said the courts need to "make an example" of Treleaven and put him away for a long time.

A sentencing date for Treleaven hasn't yet been set.
