From Disaster to Pork Barrel

Stop Louisiana politicians and other from turning the storm disaster into an excuse for pork barrel politics. many people need help. However, the storm is not properly an excuse for what our mayors, representatives, senators, and governor request. The requests amaze and dismay me. Some of it makes sense. However, its seems to me that many requests have to do with what municipal, parish, and state governments have not done to meet their obligations. This is not the time to pay for massive building and highway programs. It may be time to think about the location of New Orleans and what to protect and what to let return to nature.
I have no objection to the government helping people sell their property at what had been fair market value to convert a large part of New Orleans to parks and wilderness. That would be the less expensive way to help many people.
Our school systems were awful before the dislocation. Does the rest of the country owe building schools for Louisiana, when the locals refuse to pay for decent schools? I do not think that is fair. The Orleans Parish School System had squandered millions of dollars long before the storm. Of course, it is broke.
