Update on Pets

I heard an interview a few hours ago with Dr. Martha Littlefield (this is from my limited old-aged memory) of the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry about a program planned in advance to rescue pets in areas hit by the storm.

The Exposition Center is the site where veterinarians and volunteers are bathing, feeding, and comforting thousands of pets rescued from Orleans Parish. They have a plan to help reunited owners with their pets. They have photographs of pets. They may have information about from where the pets came, though about that I am not certain.

Dr. Littlefield reports that dogs fared less well than cats. They are more agitated than the cats.

Dogs are more dependent on their masters. I lived on a ranch for a while with both dogs and a cat. The cat was always bringing home animals he'd caught, mice and even snakes. He could have survived on his own. The dogs couldn't have. As far as I know, they never caught anything.

p.s. Thanks for the update.

Last Wednesday NBC showed a reporter leaving New Orleans. Half way across the bridge they spotted a medium sized dog standing against the barracade. The reporter stopped and tried to feed the dog plus give him some water. The animal growled and refused food and water. Clearly the poor dog was extremely agitated. I have had Irish Setters for 30 years. But not one could have surived on its own. They depend on their master, the leader of the pack, so to speak, for their food. We have totally bred out the killer instinct for obvious reasons. That's why I become absolutely livid when someone drops off a dog on the highway. It's nothing short of murder.

The plight of most conventional pets in New Orleans must be horrible and I am so happy that someone is trying to help these creatures.

The report this morning is that dogs in the 9th Ward may be shot. They are clearly not getting care.

Newsclipping in AOL startup page just told that owners with more that one Pet were denied. Excess killed or gassed.

I think any denial of owner to return to their home or their Pets is serious Errors of POWER TO BE. I think.Johan N3RF
