I am under a doctors care. Was taking 200 mg spirolactone daily. Also 1.25

premarin 4X daily. I developed kidney problems due to spiro. He has changed me to a once monthly injection of Lupron. Any information on Lupron would be appreciated. I am an insulin dependent diabetic.

Depo-Lupron is VERY expensive. Has he billed you yet? I hope you have good insurance. I can't inagine why he doesn't like Depo-Provera.

It is well known that Depo Provera causes hyperglyemia, or high blood sugar -- which is very dangerous for an insulin dependant diabetic. In fact most diabetic sex offenders will not qualify for chemical castration.

Diabetes is a disorder of the hormone insulin. Any substance which either interferes with or enhances the effect of insulin is very dangerous for a diabetic individual, who must keep their blood sugar levels within very narrow parameters in order to avoid going into a coma or causing damage to their vision and other organs.

Testosterone enhances the effect of insulin. Removing it will make the insulin one is taking less effective. If I were diabetic I would think long and hard before messing with my hormonal / endocrine system, and I would also talk to medical professionals about this, not asking strangers on the internet who in many instances will provide incomplete, ill-informed or outright dangerous advice.

OK, but DL is a testosterone blocker, too. That is why it is used to treat prostate cancer.

madscientist -- you are absolutely right, Lupron blocks testosterone too. Depo Provera actually interferes with insulin and glycemic control. So I suppose if I had to chose one route as a diabetic, I'd go for the Lupron which will more narrowly affect testosterone levels. I think the bigger picture is everyone needs to keep in mind chemical castration is altering some fundamental aspects of our hormone / endocrine system, and to proceed with caution. In researching surgical castration I've also read accounts of diabetics who died shortly after physical castration, so obviously removing the primary source of testosterone drastically alters one's glycemic control as well.
