can someone help me..... ive turned on my computer only to find out that the monitor has decided it wants to display everything in red. Ive been playing with the colour calibrations for the past hour only to find a just about bareable screen.... the colours are still so mirky! i spose its a bit too greeny blue, but if i add anymore red then you can see theres too much red does anyone know if there are standard calibrations? its only a cheepish proview monitor (www.proview.com) .......

There may be buttons on your monitor to adjust it as well. Try that.

Look up the suitable driver for you monitor, if there is one, and reinstall it. Usually, only pricey $$$ monitors have those. Reinstall the driver(s) for your video card. Reboot.

If the red problem is still there, then the tube in the monitor is probably bad.

We had one go sky blue once, no saving it. Monitors in heavy use, especially cheaper ones, usually don't last too long.

Do the controls on your monitor include a "degaussing" function? If so, try it. If this does not work, look at your graphics card - it may be faulty, although this is less likely. Another possibility is loose cable connections to the monitor, or corroded contacts on the graphics card - try disconnecting them, then putting them back, with the machine turned off. Failing any of these solving the problem, the only conclusion must be that the electron guns in the monitor are faulty.

Sometimes a cold solder joint inside can to this. If you give the monitor a light bang and the screen flickers significantly this is one way of testing that issue.

Thats the old naval method of repair: if it doesn't work - hit it with a hammer! If it still doesn't work - get a bigger hammer.

Actually, if there's still red there, and it's in the right place, it's rather more likely that there's a faulty component in the 'red channel' electronics. Back in the days servicing a TV meant fixing it rather than replacing it, 'weak colour' faults were usually due to underspecified resistors 'cooking' and changing value. Manufacturers used to (and still do) cut corners by using components that would 'just about do', rather than a marginally more expensive one that would last, with the result that 9 times out of 10 fixing a TV was just a case of matching the symptom to the particular failing component in the list of those known to be over-stressed in the particular model of TV.

Of course, these days it's cheaper to buy new than to get someone to try to fix it.
